I have receieved my Vostro 1400, however to my dismay, the screen is very grainy. It is is a 14 inch 1440x900 Truelife screen, the part number is AUO1447.
I have spoken to tech support and they have said that the AUO screen are no longer sourced, I will either get a Samsung or LG screen. From the forums, it would seem the LG is the best.
The tech support guy was very helpful, and even said if I could supply the part number, he can try and get that one ordered for me. The Dell technician will come tomorrow.
I have found two part numbers but none seem to 'work' (im in the UK)
XP059 - not available
KR515 - can not be ordered (not sure why)
Could someone please supply any alternative Dell part numbers for a 14 inch LG screen, with 1440x900 resolution.
Much appreciated

you don't want the 14.1" WXGA+ LG screen. It's horrid. Trust me. I've had one.
As long as you can live with cruddy light leakage, the Samsung SEC4457 is the best 'non-grainy' display.
In the states its part # XK309
Good luck! -
I ended up getting the AUO replaced again because one of the backlights on it was dim causing a dark area on the screen. This time I got a SEC 1440x900 as a replacement. I wouldn't say the SEC has more backlight bleed that the AUO, the AUO also bled. I think the SEC just has "uneven" backlight bleeding, where the AUO bled more or less from every direction. Because of this, the AUO overall didn't look like it bled much, it just looked a lot more washed out.
Overall though, I'm much happier with the SEC than the AUO, again irrespective of any graininess, the SEC colors just look more vivid. -
My 14.1" WXGA+ LG screen is so much better that the SEC one I had to replace. It's not so much the manufacturer you have to worry about. If you have a good screen you have a good screen.

I had just had the Dell Engineer come out and replace the screen.
The part number is WK097 and the screen is a Samsung - SEC4457.
The grain is definitely less than the previous one but it is still slightly grainy. For example, having a blank wordpad window open, you will notice it. Whereas on my old Vaio it is one uniform block of white, you will notice minute grains on the dell.
Also the screen is definitely more 'washout out' compared to the old one, the images are not as vivid, it’s almost like the top level on the brightness control is missing. Running Displaymate, the last two greyscales are not visable, whereas on my Vaio its just the last one
I have read a disclaimer somewhere that because of the manufacturing process, you may notice slightly grain on higher resoultions screen. I also read a posting (about 8 months old) where a guy returned a couple of laptops and view a number more in store, all higher resolution screen showed some grain.
Is it really possible to get a 1440 resolution on a 14 inch without grain ?
Now I appreciate that you are not going to get a perfect screen, especially on a lower end screen, its a balance. I just want a screen with no graininess and an acceptable screen quality. To be honest, if my new screen was not grainy at all, I could live with the fact that it is not as vivid
I don't know what to do ? Try again for another replacement, and request an LG one ? (anyone with a valid part number). Or just go for a 1280 resolution on a 14inch, are the lower resolution screens less problematic?
