I went from Dell to HP, and then back to Dell for my last few laptops. The HP ones look nice and have lots of media functions, however, the hardware design is actually very poor. Some models have the back lifted when using a high capacity battery. The case is mostly plastic (it was all plastic before DV6000 era, now the top layer is metal). It makes the keyboard bounce while typing with the back raised. In DV4000, it puts the lid closing sensor at the back right corner that protruded from the service. Every now and then something hit that little rubber pin (even a piece of paper) and triggered the sleeping mode. The cooling fans are on the bottom and it gets really hot when you are using it as a "laptop". Anyway, it died soon around the warranty expired.

On the other hand, I have little problem with my Inspiron 8200, Vostro 1400, and Latitude D510.

They both have different strengths and weaknesses. So which is better depends on your usage and preferences.

I am sitting here now with a new Dell M1530 next to a HP DV6000t series laptop.
I really was excited to recieve the new dell, very sleek exterior design, and benchmarks very well, however, the LCD Screen quality compared to the HP's leaves alot to be desired. The LG/Phillips screen/HP simply mops the floor with the Samsung in the Dell.
I have ordered another M1530 hoping it will fare better than this one, good luck with your purchase.

I have had numerous dells and currently I use an HP DV2000t and am going to replace it with the M1330. While the HP design looks nice I don't think it is very functional, the lid of my laptop kind of hangs a little now since it has been opened and closed so much. Also one thing i really hate is the glossy interior, I want the matte finish on the inside, especially when it comes to the trackpad, it is way to slick, personally I prefer the dells as I have had no trouble with them at all.

Hard to say without considering your needs? What are your biggest priorities? Looks? Video encoding? Gaming? Internet? Weight?

Helps to fill out the FAQ.

Well I actually like the Dell's looks better, but I seem to be in the minority on that one.

In any case, the Dell Inspiron is certainly thicker and heavier. But since you're interested in gaming, I would think you'd want the Dell in order to get the more powerful graphics card.

Then again, if you prefer the HP, you may want to ask in the gaming forum here about how well Battlefield 2142 plays on the 8400M GS that's in the HP dv6500t. (Or better yet, try a search first.) However, since gaming is an interest, I have a feeling you'll be better off getting the Dell due to it having the 8600M GT.

The new Dell XPS M1530 would be another option... one that's thinner and lighter than the Inspiron... but with your budget, it may be out of reach, unfortunately.

Dell hands down. Hp have there advantages but, heh - still ew.

Everyone praised HP for awhile just because they didn't use any other screens besides LG's. But gradually, I'm seeing more..and more people dump there HP's and come back to Dell and other brands.

Dell are good anyways. Some of there systems have a few small minor flaws. But there strong, they last, and perform. And if they should screw up, Dell fixes them and usually compensate you if it's bad enough. they bend over backwards to make you happy pretty much.

Dell doesn't have an amazing reputation to say the least, I was even skeptical on getting mine. But since I got it..aw man.. It's better then ***.. lol

On a side note, Dell do still use LG screens. Mine arrived with one, I dropped, cracked it, got a second LG as well - Beautiful screens. Samsung and this AOU company is there newly introduced manufactures for screens to there products recently, I guess, and man are they feeling the pain. My theory for using Samsung and aou screens is because demand got so bad for LCD panels lately, LG was plugged so Dell had no other choice to look for other sources of LCDs. But I'm speculating that - likely true. Not enough screens mean not able to sell as many laptops.

swarmer, I like Dells looks better too ;). Hp look..cheap.. LOL
