    Hi guys :)

My brother is in the states and will be there for one week. I don´t have the time to purchase a laptop online as it will not arrive in time, before he leaves the country. My question is:

Can you buy extended warranty from Dell on a laptop that you buy in let´s say Bestbuy? I need the Dell warranty because I can transfer it to Iceland and the company here will service the computer. Can´t buy the Bestbuy warranty, cant transfer that :)

Hopefully someone can answer this for me, can´t see anything about it on their website.

    Thanks
    Arnor, Iceland.

Well, found it one the site. Is the 3 year extended warranty really approx. 300$ for a Studio laptop ?

Sounds about right yeah, it doesn't matter if it's for a cheaper or more expensive laptop. The warranty covers the same items, and one of the reassons the more expensive laptops cost more is that the warranty is often already included.

It may seem expensive, but having a warranty is amazing.

The warranty is amazing - but only if he ensures that he gets it from the SMB side.

The warranty is meaningless if the gets it from the HHO side.

How is it meaningless from home and home office? I've had generally good experiences with them.

It isn't really...if you get NBD on-site warranty you'll get good service. Especially in smaller countries there doesn't even seem to be a real separate division for it, maybe on the phone but not the tech guys who come to your house. I wouldn't worry about it.

On the HHO side? The long hold times, the call center operators who have such thick accents you can barely understand them, the need to play dumb and go through the same old script every time, the transfers back and forth between supervisors and sometimes departments if your problem isn't routine.

On the SMB side? Someone usually picks up the phone right away, they're in the same country as you are, you can just tell them what's broken and needs to be repaired or replaced, and they're empowered to actually help you without having to first get permission from the supervisor.

For the same warranty price, the choice between spending 10 minutes on the phone to get a problem fixed and spending an hour or more on the phone to get the same problem fixed is a no-brainer.

Hold times usually aren't bad for me but I suppose there is a good chance that is because I usually call at night PST. I personally don't mind accents but I can see why some may get aggravated at times by it (though Dell Chat removes this from being an issue). I will agree though that the "scripted" solution procedure can indeed be annoying at times though occasionally you might get a technician who doesn't feel like wasting everyone's time by repeating troubleshooting steps. That said, I still certainly wouldn't call the warranty worthless because of this. In my opinion, their home warranty tends to be better than the home warranties of numerous other OEMs.

Dell online chat has better holding time.

My apologies, worthless might have been too strong a word. It's just that there have been so many occasions where that word (along with numerous obscenities) has come to mind when I deal with HHO customer service that my judgment on this issue has become clouded and I've grown increasingly cynical about the HHO side over time.

Nonetheless, there's no reason to get a HHO warranty when a SMB warranty is the same price, yet the level of service you get is a world apart.

Instead of starting another thread, I would like to tag on:
Can you add accidental coverage later on after you receive your laptop? And, more importantly is it really ever worth it?

CaptainMorgan: Generally only within the return period. It's worth it if you tend to be rough on electronics or are accident prone.

In addition to what jason1214 said, it includes a subscription to LoJack (equal to the number of years of accidental damage coverage you purchase) though you may have different activation steps as it wouldn't be pre-installed on your computer.

What does this have to do with fraud? He never said his computer was broken (and specifically implied it wasn't by asking if it was worth even purchasing the warranty as well as by providing the reason he didn't get it at time of purchase).

Yeah you're not really making any sense here. It might be fraud if he was asking if he could get complete care on an already broken laptop without them knowing it or something.....but that's not the case at all.
