    Hi all,

I had a question regarding the ownership transfer of a Dell e1705 laptop I recently purchased off eBay. When I went online to transfer the ownership on Dell's website, I saw that the original owner's name was required. (I know at some point in the past only the service tag and express service code were required) Apparently, the person I bought the laptop from is not the original owner since his name did not match the one on record for the computer. I emailed the seller yesterday to ask if he knew the name of the original owner but he has not gotten back in touch with me yet. Am I out of luck if I am not able to get the correct name?

I guess they do that to prevent people who steal the laptop from getting a warranty.

You can do it over the phone if you've got the service tag (and the express service code?). It seems to be somewhat of a crapshot though; I had to do this on one occasion and two reps said they wouldn't do the transfer without the old name while the third rep successfully did the transfer without any hassle. Call 'em up and ask around. Tell them you need to transfer the ownership, you don't know the original owner's name, but you've heard that it can be done without the old name.

Hi Xkaliber, I hope that you get the transfer done! If you do keep in mind that even after you have completed the transfer information that it could still take up to two weeks for the warranty to switch over to your name. The Dell web site might tell you it will be shorter and thats great if it happens that way. However, through personal experience, it took me two weeks to get it done.

    Good Luck!
