I just got a dell XPS M1530 and have been messing around with the Dell webcam center. Have any of you figured out the email part of the motion detection. Tried my schools email and gmail with no results. Used gmail's SMTP setup too.

    Thanks.

Not to hijack to much. But I've been using mine with limited success. I get my webcam picture in my sidebar gadget. But when I open my webcam center, and it initializes, I then get the message "failed to start preview video, please reconnect your camera" . I had a guy out today to work on the screen hinge, and he replaced the base plate, I told him of this issue, and he ran the webcam driver, and got it to work. I played with the computer for awhile and it still worked, I shut the computer down for awhile, and now its not working, but it does in my sidebar gadget. Anyone have any ideas?

I gave up on my webcam issues from the first day I got it. It was such a pain in the arse. Not messing with that again.

I just thought it would be cool to leave the computer in my room and have it email me when motion goes by. Would be funny to see when i check my email when I am not home.

That would be cool. Unfortunately, I have not done such a thing, and I doubt many others have, and that would explain why you have received no conclusive answers. Most people just use their webcams for taking pictures or video. ;)

I've gotten mine to work without any trouble. Seems pretty easy, there isn't that many fields to fill out. What is happening with yours? Surely between everyone here we can fix it or at least point to the problem.

In mine I specified the outgoing SMTP mail server, but not any username or password (didn't work with them in there). And remember to check the "Send photo to my email" option in the General settings.

The photos it sends are pretty blury, especially if the person is moving quickly.

What kind of Email are you using and can you tell me exactly what you typed in each one.

    Thanks for the help

Are you using the same email to send and receive it and if you are what service is it? What port. All help is appreciated.

I'm not giving you my actual email address and email server, they wouldn't work for you anyway, I hope. :)

I just used the email my ISP provides, and entered the same outgoing SMTP server I use in my email settings in Windows Mail. Your email provider has to be able to tell you what server to use to send your email, unless it is web based only. If you have Windows Mail, or Outlook, or some other email software, look at your account/s in there, they should have an outgoing email server. My ISPs server does not require outgoing mail authentication, and as I mentioned if I entered the username and password details into the Dell Webcam Center it didn't work for me. I used the default port, 25. The webcam does not receive email, but I put the same email address into the From and To fields.

I think the only thing you would typically need to get right is the outgoing SMTP server, and I would guess if it requires authentication, then also your username and password.
