Can someone tell what are the risks involved in purchasing X1 from dell outlet store? For example, several people were complaining about the dimm display of X1, and it is also mentioned in some review. Is it possible, that a chance to get a unit with dimm display from the outlet store is (considerably) higher than normally?

You have no more risk that through the regular store.

You are going to take that chance whether you order from dell.com or through their outlet store. The only difference is the outlet store sells computers that were returned within the 21 day policy, so technically they are used computers.

I believe you get a longer return period with outlet store purchases. Dell's normal return period is 21 days, and with outlet, you get 30 days to return the laptop if you don't like it.

I don't think there is much difference in risk factors. Whichever you order from, you have a chance of getting a bad laptop, light leakage, dead pixels, etc.

    Brian & SouthernGirl,

    Thanks for your answers.

I, however, thought that the chance that people dislike and return back their X1 with dimm displays more likely than those with better displays, and then those are resold from the outlet store. So, I thought, there might be higher chance of getting a unit with dimm display from the outlet store. Sounds logical or paranoid?

Sounds logical, but at the same time, people might just return X1 because they don't like the style, or wrong part, etc. I think either way you go, you are going to have the chance of getting a dimm display. I've heard both good and bad stories about Dell Outlet. Some users are happy with their purchases from Dell outlet, and some weren't.

My advice: If you are really worried about the dimm display and can afford it, then buy a new one. If you can't afford it, take your chance and buy one from outlet. I think your chance of getting a dimm display are going to be the same either way you go.

You should look into the sony TX650P. I have been looking at both the x1 and the TX650p.

I have been leaning for the sony.

THe X1 doesnt have a glossy screen correct?

The X1 doesn't have an optical drive does it? What drive does that Sony have? If any.

The new Fujitsu P is also fanless and probably has a better screen. More expensive though.

My X1 is from the UK Outlet store, and it was as new; also, the warranty is the same as a new machine - I recently bought an i9300 from UK Outlet and the vents at the rear were broken; I naturally complained and since Dell couldn't source another Outlet machine of the same spec, they replaced the machine with a brand new one.

I'll have to highly disagree on that. On the whole, I feel that they make excellent notebooks, though I was quite upset at the quality of their P5000 series, I found it to be very flimsy.

How do you buy from the UK outlet store? That would be an option for me.
Will be visiting London a couple of times till the end of the year.

I was not able to find outlet store offers of x1 at dell.co.uk. Please tell me which link do you use?

    Try either
    www.dell.co.uk/outlet OR
    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dfo

Often they have no items of a given type, hence the lack of X1's when you looked, they will come back at some point.

The trick with Outlet is that a genuine bargain will be there for just seconds, as there are professional traders as well as individuals lurking to buy, so you've got to be both lucky AND fast - always add a laptop to your basket as fast as possible and decide after.

Also, on UK Outlet I've found that few items are a genuine bargain, and many are a bad deal, so beware.

    Good luck!

I have received an 20% discount coupon for Latitudes from the US Dell Outlet store. It is valid till 12/22. I am unlikely to be able to make use of it till 12/22.

If someone is interested to get the number, please send me PM.
I hope it is transferable (though it has been sent to my registration email).

I will give preference to the forum members I know from their posts.
