My recently purchased X300 from Ebay's harddrive crapped out on me yesterday.. Hangs completely on HDTune and then eventually BSODs.. I can hear it sounding clanky during the process.

Anyways, if anybody knows, these X300/300Ms models are very slim laptops at .8" thick. I'm not sure if I have to use a special type of harddrive... It's 2.5", but I think it might be thinner than your average 2.5".. The Toshiba model thats in it is claimed "Super slim".. it's a 5400rpm.. but I would like to upgrade to a 7200rpm if I have to buy a new drive.

Can I put any ATA-6 7200rpm in this or will I need to buy super-slim types?

    Thanks in advance!

What is the product number for your current hard drive?

Okay, it appears that that laptop can handle normal 9.5mm drives, so as long as you get an ATA-6 9.5mm 2.5" hard drive, you should be fine regardless of spindle speed.

Great! Thanks for the info.. I went ahead and ordered a Hitachi 7200rpm drive, I made sure it was 9.5mm high ;)

FYI, you will have to remove the keyboard and palm rest to get access to the hdd so you might want to look at the service guide on dell's support site if you dont already know how.
