Is there any advantage to getting the Dell over the Alienware or vice versa?

    They seem very similar.

I am honestly wondering the same thing, considering Alienware is owned by DELL. Although for me, I am comparing the New 2019 refresh of the DELL G7 against the Alienware M15, and M17. (The New G7 does have a 17 Inch Configuration as well) Before it was pretty straight forward for me, the G7 only has a 60HZ refresh display and maxes out with a 1060 MAXQ GPU. But now, you could get it with a 144HZ Display and RTX Graphics Cards, and it even has the Alienware Command Center and customizable RGB keyboard lighting. Might as well call it an Alienware on it's own already. xD

As for the XPS vs the AW M15.. As a gamer, I would prefer the M15 due to it's GPU options, the multiple storage options, and of course the fater refresh screen option. Of course, the M15 does come with a pretty hefty price tag..

Yeah they really aren't the same class of notebook. The M15 is a thin gaming laptop whereas the XPS is a thin powerful productivity laptop.

The XPS throttles the GPU at 75C which causes it to throttle down when playing any demanding games (even undervolted my 1050ti ran at <1000MHz when playing Far Cry 5). It's not really a gaming laptop, it's a laptop that can play the occasional game. The XPS gets amazing battery life and is the size of a 14" laptop.

I can't comment personally on the M15 but it does look like a nice laptop. It's bigger than the XPS but should cool better and hopefully doesn't have the silly early throttling point on the GPU. Like Trystan pointed out, you can get better GPUs in the M15 which would make it a much better gaming machine.

I believe the trackpad is glass on the Alienware m15, but not sure about the current or upcoming Dell G7?

    for sound/audio

XPS 15 uses Realtek + Waves MaxxAudio
while Alienware M15 uses Alienware Sound Center (Realtek + Nahimic)

I echo the comments that they really are in a different class. The M15 is still a sizable laptop whereas the XPS is intended to be portable. If you game a lot, go with the alienware. If you are only a casual gamer, the XPS should suit you just fine. If you are very mobile and battery life is more important, the XPS is probably a better pick.

Plus, the m15 can be connected to the Alienware Graphics AMP, while with the XPS you'd have to go through TB3 and pay a noticeably higher performance penalty.
