Hi I don't know much about either but I see that they have 4k screen, have a quad core i7 and 2 ram slots (I'd like to put in 2x16gb sodimm). What are the differences? I want to be able to put in my 1tb msata and my 1tb 2.5" drive. If not I can buy another msata or m.2. the more ram slots the better. I don't play games but an mxm or replaceable video card is a plus.

Neither of these machines have an MXM GPU. They both have similar specs, except the Inspiron has a 4GB version of the GTX 960M and has better cooling, while the XPS has the new USB 3.1-C/Thunderbolt 3 connector.

As Ramzay said, neither laptop uses an MXM GPU. Theoretically, the Thunderbolt 3 port in the XPS 15 could connect to an external GPU, but since Thunderbolt 3 is so new there aren't any products that support that yet.

As for other differences, the Inspiron 15 7559 uses DDR3 and a SATA M.2 slot while the XPS 15 9550 uses DDR4 and a PCIe M.2 slot. That could be important, if you care about either of the two features. If not, you probably won't notice the difference in normal use.

There are also form factor differences, of course: comparing the 4K touchscreen versions, the XPS weighs 4.5 lbs vs 6.0 lbs for the Inspiron, and the XPS takes up less than 50% of the Inspiron's volume (LxWxH in inches: 14.06 x 9.27 x 0.45-0.66 vs 15.08 x 10.43 x 1.0). The Inspiron has a larger keyboard with full-size numpad. The XPS has an "InfinityEdge" display with really tiny bezels.

Summary: The Inspiron 15 7559 offers really good performance/price, while the XPS 15 9550 offers a sleek form factor plus possible future expansion (via the USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3 port) at a much higher cost.

A good review of the Inspiron 15 7559 from a gaming perspective: http://www.gaminglaptopsjunky.com/dell-inspiron-15-7559-review/
