I ordered an XPS 16 i7 laptop yesterday, before I did I rang customer services and asked about delivery times. No one could give me a definitive answer but the general concessis was 7 - 10 working days.
Infact the day before I asked for an email quote which said 'If you confirm your Order today 09-December-2009 the order is estimated to be delivered on, or before 18-December-2009.'
So I figured if I ordered on the 10th, it should before Christmas. I put in my order yesterday, 10th, and what is my estimated delivery time?
26 - 01 - 10!
Thats over 6 weeks, im shocked quite frankly. Given that on dells website it says under 'Laptop Christmas last order dates' if you order an XPS 16 before 13th Dec its more than likely to arrive before Christmas.
Ive phoned Dell up so many times trying to get through to someone who knows.. well anything! and someone who can help. They all reply with the standard pre set answers and couldnt help a customer if there lives depended on it!
That is just false advertising, plain and simple... if id have known I probably wouldnt have bought. I need a laptop relatively quick as im starting a new job. Ive asked in as many different ways as I know if theres some way I could pay more for express delivery or something like that... anything. They even have Fast Track laptops, if they can do it for them im sure they could do it for mine if they wanted to.
I wanted to share my experiences, anyone else had to wait over 6 weeks? Im glad I found this site, its not just me *shrug*

My apologies, im not sure if my order is an XPS 1645 or not... 16, 1645.. difference?
If this belongs in the Order Status Thread please move it.
-
Don't worry. Dell is getting their act together. Should arrive to you within 3 weeks or less.

I think they are just finally being honest (after only one lie) regarding estimated shipping date. I ordered a Studio 1747 with the Intel Duo 9600 on 11/12/09 with an ESD (estimated shipping date) of 12/4/09. On that day they changed the ESD to 12/22/09. So including the delay I am looking at 6 weeks also. I think a lot of people are canceling orders, so you may get it sooner, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. If you have a copy of the email that said you would receive by Christmas you can cancel your order based on the Federal Mail Order law because technically they delayed it.
Edit: ...assuming you live in America -
My order for a system exchange for an M1530 and my second replacement is an I7 xps 1645 the order was placed on 12/8/09 and is supposed to ship on DEC 14. Idk if mine went through the same line or jumped ahead of the line but I wouldn't go by the ship date. I think dell is leaving themselves extra time for part delays.
-
A friend was told by a Dell rep that the wait was currently 3 weeks over the normal wait time (~12 days) as at the end of November. They stated categorically that an XPS 1645 would not be delivered before Christmas if they ordered at that time.
This is for Australia however I have noted that some people are getting theirs shipped based on the i7 order status thread. I previously ordered one but cancelled after 4 painful weeks of dealing with Dell. -
I ordered an XPS 1645 from Dell UK about a month ago and was given a lead time of about 5 weeks and it arrived in just over 3.
I've just placed another order for a Studio 17 i7 today and I too saw the note on the website saying order by the 13th for delivery by Christmas and the EDD has come through as the 8 weeks away.
That is a ridiculous time to wait for a laptop so I've sent them an email asking if this is realistic and if it is then I may well cancel. -
I'm pretty sure you'll get yours by Christmas. If u look at the 1645 order status thread you'll see that there is alot of activity for old and new orders. I myself ordered on the 5th and the phone status is already "In Boxing". The EDD that i received was 1/5/2010
-
Thanks for the information/stories guys. I live in the UK, its good to know that customers seem to be getting theres in about 3 weeks. Hopefully my status will be updated relatively soon, im not holding out much hope though.
Ive read quite a bit of the order status thread and it looks like the EDD might just be covering themselves. Its still terrible though, they should change there website as to not mislead people.
Ollie222 I have also sent an email asking if 6 weeks is realistic, I doubt I will get a reply though. There customer service is terrible.
Here's hoping... -
My order says 'In Production' now... the UK dont seem to have many order stages
Not like in the US or Australia that ive seen here.
-
Im stunned! Woke up this morning and it said 'Order Shipped'. No new delivery time but the WW website says 'Your order is in transit and will be delivered within the next 4 days'
What a great birthday present from DellIts my birthday today
Im still not getting my hopes up for a pre xmas delivery but getting better!
-
I'm glad to hear that yours has shipped Sevv, you should enjoy it, I'm finding mine great.
As for my Studio 17 that moved to in production yesterday so hopefully they'll pull something out of the bag.
If it does arrive early then Dell really don't help themselves with giving dates so far off in the future as it must cause them a lot of extra support queries. -
-
Well its been 48 hrs since I was told id get another EDD in 24 hrs, it says shipping but maybe its still in boxing *shrug* I cant see it arriving on Saturday.
Glad to hear you like it Ollie! -
Yea... dell's ordering timing is very horrible
online my order stated it was being shipping 5-7 days but when I checked on fedex it's being shipped 3-5 days...
good to hear everything worked out for you! -
Indeed
Still no update here... Walsh Western arnt very good at keeping you informedStill says 'a scheduled delivery date will be available within the next 24 hrs'
Ill believe it when I see it. If the original shipped email is to be believed, it will arrive on Sat, the timetable says its still in China -
You guys order a laptop during the holiday period and are surprised it takes long before you get it delivered
-
Well the studio 17 I ordered on the 12th has now been shipped and will hopefully arrive with me in the next 4 days which considering the EDD was the 02/02/2010 that's quite a difference.
My experience of the Walsh Western delivery is that you will get a call when it lands in the UK which takes about 3 days from when it's shipped and then they'll arrange a time to deliver, hopefully the following day. -
Yeah Ollie that seems to be the case, 'Carrier will phone customer to arrange suitable delivery date'
As of 14:36 today (18th) its location is JOM AUTH then a long number, activity AM Delivery. Anyone know what JOM AUTH is?
edit - 15:46 Plan Committed, Activity - Note... well obviously
edit 2 - Looks like ive got an EDD now, JOM 21/12/09 AM SCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE. No phone call but I can only assume this means AM delivery on Monday.
edit 3 - 18/12/09, 19:37, WWI - HINCKLEY, ORDER DISPATCHED FROM HUB. -
I can confirm that for Germany too. in Process -> Production -> Shipped
Also the time between order und shipping seems not to be such a "torture" like in the US.
Order Date: 12/09 -> Order confirmed 12/15 -> in Process 12/15 -> Production 12/16 - 12/17 (~4pm) -> Shipped 12/17
Original EAD was 01/18/10. So not that bad :-D -
Thanks!
Yeah the EDD doesnt seem to be worth much.
Mine says its now in Greenford in London, delivery online and phone still says AM Monday 21st.
I wont be in on Monday AM though... typical... so im trying to find out where it will be sent if no ones in. Hopefully they will ring and I can get it sent to work. We shall see, it may turn up before 9am... not impossible -
It arrived on Tuesday, a few days ago. I havent seen it yet, its with my girlfriend who ill be seeing again tonight.
Im just happy its arrive, no large dents or scratchs that she can see
Happy Christmas everyone and I hope you all recieve yours before tomorrow.
