Hi I am looking at buying this model and would like to hear from people who have one do you really like it? Also have you had any major issues? I have a Toshiba P30 that I am going to replace and from what I have read about the Dell XPS 1710 I like. I was also going to purchase it off ebay as I am from Canada and I can save approx. $1500.00 even after paying the exchange, shipping and duty, does anyone have an opinion on that?

Yes, get the service tag from the seller before you purchase it. Contact Dell and make sure it isn't listed as stolen and that a computer with that service tag actually exists.
Sorry, but eBay is a hotbed of activity that isn't always on the up-and-up when it comes to big ticket items. And I don't want to see any one get ripped off. I did about a year ago when I purchased a monitor.
Oh, and pay through PayPal if you can...if something goes wrong they'll back you up...they saved my bacon.
But $1500 off is really good for that notebook. If the deal is legit then you've got a great catch of a computer there! -
thanks for the tip on getting the service tag I never thought of that, I usually go by their feedback and how long they have been around. I will be paying through paypal. I also checked with Dell to make sure that the warranty would be valid in Canada and they said it was good worldwide. I know in the US you guys can buy from the dell outlet but that isn't an option for us in Canada so that is why I was looking at ebay. I just want to get a good gaming notebook that I can have for a few years.

Mine is on its way to me rite now, and i'll see about letting you know what i think when it comes in next week. In the mean time... I must have read 15 or 20 reviews of the M1710 and all of them gave the machine a solid thumbs up. more than one even did bench marks agains desktops and laptops, not just desktop replacements. The only think I have heard any one say bad about it, is that the screen may be dark. I'll let you know, it's rated at 250nits wich is more than the machine i have now, and i dont have any issues with my current machine.

Like I said, just watch your back and you'll be fine. I wish I could have gotten a deal like that when I needed a new notebook!

I bought mine when they hit the market about what 18-20 months ago as the Dell XPS Gen 2.
I have since bought a Dell 700m, and am now going for an Asus A8Js. I'll give you my personal opinion on the Dell.
It has been a solid gaming machine for me since day one. My biggest gripes that I didn't know going into it is that it gets SO hot there the video card is (back right) that I can't put it on my lap and play games. This has gotten progressively worse over the past few months. About 2 months ago a blue vertical line appeared about 1/3 of the way in on the LCD. I did a bunch of research and it looks like the LCD is shot. Not worth replacing it at the price of a 17" LCD. Lastly, the LCD is the worst I've ever seen. People were complaining about the "fireworks" looks of the display, and I couldn't understand it until I saw mine in person. For games you don't notice, but when you see anything with a white background it looks terrible. It is not a nice, crisp white, but looks like smal water droplets on the LCD everywwhere that shows the pixel colors (red, green, blue). It's weird. The odd thing is that my Dell 700m has the nicest LCD of any laptop I've ever owned.
The stuff I already knew was the size/weight/bling. It's tough to take a computer like that to a meeting, and traveling with it sucks in general. But it sure can play games. It still keeps up with everything I play, even with the 2.0 Pent. M and GeForce 6800 256.
But now that I found a 14" 5.25 pounder with a Geforce Go 7700, I'm downsizing to it....

i'm looking for one of those devilish laptops .. wondering the best price for it .. and where do i buy it from .. also shipping international bla bla .. same spec of bartlanz.
if any of you guys guide me or lead me to a company that offer that i would be thankful . *sigh* -
I ordered my from Dell directly, I was going to order off ebay but called Dell to see if the warranty would be transferred to Canada, I was told by one dell customer service person that it would, but decided to check again was told that it is not transferable for the extended warranty. I was able to get the same specs plus a little more for basically the same price as ebay. Depending on where you are you can check ebay.
