Thanks for the article. Interesting to note that Dell opted for the Blu-Ray as opposed to HD-DVD.

Let the format wars begin...

I'm not going to spend my money on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD for a few years, who wants to be part of the Betamax story all over again?
-
I'm going to wait until it is confirmed that current laptops (like mine) can play HD-DVD and/or BluRay without this extra HDCP crap. I'm not going to buy all new equipment just to play movies. I'll only buy the optical drive.
Gophn tells me that HD movies will play at full resolution without HDCP over analog connections like to my laptop screen or a monitor over VGA. Apparently the digital signal is the one you have to worry about (piracy) so that's the one that is protected. If true, then my setup already works legally.
I'll probably go with HD-DVD unless BluRay delivers a crushing blow in the next year or so. -
How about the BluRay? Will it only play thru digital connections, and that means requiring HDMI??
-
What I meant by HD movies: anything in high definition. So yes, HD-DVD & BluRay as far as I know.
I swear: why can't they just compromise!!! Then this terminology wouldn't be so darned difficult!
Dell XPS 1710 now with Blue-Ray
