    Greetings everyone

Just a few moments ago, my M1210 crashed while I was playing Counter Strike and the BSOD appeared. First, I thought it might have been a driver/hardware issue with nVidia (GeForce 7400 Go) graphics controller. However, after running Dell Diagnostics and checking the driver information, I don't think there is a problem with that.

I also noticed that my laptop has been running quite hot. I ran i8kfangui test and found out that it runs at around 70C while multi-tasking. As compared to my Inspiron, that's a quantum leap of difference.

Also, the bottom of the laptop got quite hot and I could feel my lap getting really hot! I turned off the system and it's working fine since then.

Please advice me what I can do with the laptop. I purchased it end of December and experiencing such problems in such a short time are getting me a little worried. I've been trying to figure out for the past 3 hours what has gone wrong.

Please advice. Many thanks in advance.

Btw, this forum has helped me out a lot before too!

have you called tech support about this? Do you have the A/V package? It sounds like the system is getting really hot and it's shutting down to prevent further damage. In the BIOS is a set temp that the computer will shut off if you go past it.

If you're at 70c while multitasking... how hot are you running while playing games?

btw did you install any memory yourself?

    good luck

If you didn’t notice any heat issues before then it could be a FAN failure or something like that. Better call DELL support as Sirius_GTO suggested.

I8k should tell you if the fans running or not. Do you clean out the vents on a regualar basis? A fan/heatsink caked with dust is not very effective at cooling. 70c is pretty high, but its well within tolerable levels, setting the fan to run early and often will help a great deal. I keep mine on low nonstop, and kick into high in the 40's, my light load temps are mid to lower 30's, full load hardly ever cracks 50.

wow..i wish i had that kind of fan status!!.... when just browsing the net....i'm runnin at 50-55....i also have norton runnin in the background so that could be it as well....
when i'm playin CS or Battlefield..i'm usually runnin at 65....and when i'm using adobe premiere i'm runnin about the same...

how the heck do u have it so low?!...

also...i'm noticing that my fans kick into high even when its set to go slow in I8k....i tried lowering the fan setting enforcement, and it seems to work...but not for long...

Before my heatsink was replaced, my m1210 cpu temp go up to 70C all the time and the machine still worked fine. So the CPU will work fine at 70C.

You may also monitor the GPU temp w/ I8k, it is usually higher than the CPU temperature. (The CPU and GPU share one heatsink and there's only one fan in M1210 since Go7400 is integrated on the mobo and does not have a separate fan.)

My heatsink was misplaced previousely: at the lower right corner of the heatsink, there's metal circle, the mobo is supposed to hold that circle and pull the heatsink tight onto the GPU chip. But my mobo wasn't hooked into that circle previously.

After the problem is fixed, my CPU temp runs around 55C now, my fan kicks in around 45C and goes to high speed when it hits around 65C.

I was having the same problem. What I did was clean out all the vents and fans with compressed air. If there is dust in there it will cause the sytem to overheat and start acting up. Also download 18kfangui to manage your fans
