    Hi there,

Lets say I buy a XPS M1530 with this processor:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2MB cache/2.0GHz)

Can I upgrade it later (after saving more monay) with a

    Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache)

or even a better one in the future?

I can only affort that processor right now and I have no idea on how difficult it is to upgrade a processor. Can I do it myself or it takes a pro to do that?

I know I would have to upgrade my Video Card from 128MB to 256MB with the processor.

    Thanks

you could, check under one of the covers, if the processor is there (more likely) you are one step ahead, the T7200 is socket p so you will have to find another socket p processor (T8300 is also socket p) and check motherboard compatibility

Is he also going to upgrade his GPU to alleviate the incompatability?

as fas as i know, 8400M GS is compatible with penryns or at least with the T8300, T9300 and T9500

No, it doesnt. He needs the 8600 to be able to upgrade his processor.

There is no requirement to upgrade a processor. Not sure where that information came from.

You can upgrade the CPU, but it isn't recommended. It costs too much and you probably will not notice any difference in performance. If you don't use 100% of the CPU now, there is no point.

As for the GPU...Dell used to use modular graphics cards. Unfortunately, we are hearing that Dell no longer does this on a number of its laptops. So you may not be able to ever upgrade the GPU, so keep that in mind.

The Dell website listed a compatability issue when you try to upgrade a to penryn with the 8400m GS. Maybe they are liars?

no they are not liars, they just want more money ;) (just like HP, to get a 100GB HDD in your compaq you must upgrade from combo drive to DVD+-RW) but check at my sig, i have the T8300 w/ the 8400M GS

    GPU? Motherboard compatibility?

I'm starting to think this is not a good idea...

Do you think it will be better to get an Inspiron, a Vostro or a Latitude instead of the XPS?

I will be using the notebook for creating virtual machines using virtual pc 2007, so I can practice .net 3.5, sharepoint and other kinds of software development such as J2EE and Oracle.

I don't play games and I am not a graphic designer.

I just wanted to purchase a machine that I could upgrade, maybe a year from now, and so, after the upgrade it could be an awsome computer.

But, based on what you are saying, it is not easy to upgrade a T7250. Is that right?

So, is there or isnt their a real compatability issue with the 8300+ and the 8400m GS?

If technically they work together, fraud on the part of Dell once again.

    Thanks I will do that.

    I bought my XPS M1530!

With the T7250 (I did the best I could and I couldn't wait any more). I paid 1,099.00 with 4GB of RAM.

    I wish some day I can upgrade it to a T9300 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache

It costs 319 on newegg but a year from now they will be much cheaper.

I got the 128MB 8400M GS video card and, as far as I know, I will never be able to change that. Since I don't play games I'm not that concerned with that, though.

    Thanks for all the information

they do, it is not fraud from dell, they just dont want to sell that video card at that price without charging a whopping $$ from upgrading the processor

just like last year, T7300 was a requisite if you wanted blue ray, thought T7100 worked too, but there was like 250$ to upgrade from the 7100 to 7300

Its one thing to not offer it, but they claim there is "Compatability issue between CPU and Video Card"

"Your Processor selection doesnt support your Video Card"

    Thats fraud.

misleading info...maybe they meant: "we dont want to give the card at that price without you upgrading your processor to a much more expensive model"
    haha way yo go dell!

if u ignore the warning and keep continuing... it'll eventually ask u that there might be delays choosing this config, cancel to fix the "incompatibility", or continue to cart.. u can try to buy the config, but dell might cancel that or have a rep call u up...

its worth a shot if u dont need the 8600, but i think its worth it...

Mr. Brightside you think you may upgrade to a T9300 in the future even though you just ordered with a T8300? I just ordered my m1530 but couldn't decide if it was entirely worth it to get the T9300 over the T8300. I decided on the T8300 and it is the only thing that I could get better on the laptop so it is bothering me.

well, i would like to get the T9300 (just for bragging purpuses :) ) but i realize that the T8300 is more than enough, its a really good chip
    BTW...i couldn't afford the T9300, i was in a limited budget of 1300 and i exceed that by 50 =S

I was in a limited budget of 1000 and I exceeded by 197 with taxes...

Well, my conclusion is that it is posible to upgrade a a T7250 Merom to a T9300 Penryn but is not an easy task such as RAM or HDD upgrade.

The upgrade depends on what motherboard you got... Some motherboards are upgradable to T9300 and some are not, although both processors use a socket p.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

    Thanks

Maybe I should have read more of this thread. So sorry if I look like a moron :)

But upgrading the CPU on the M1530 would be very very easy. There is one back cover, take off the heatsink (might take a wee bit of force, if this the first time you have done it, the dell thermal compound is like cement). Take out the old CPU, replace the old thermal grease with something good (AS5 or similar), replace heatsink and back cover. As long as you have the latest bios you will be good to go.

Does the M1530 use Micro-FCBGA or Micro-FCPGA? Or can both work in the M1530?

Is there a way to know if I have the latest BIOS before changing the processor? How do I check that?

I suppose if U boot the comp and enter the bios, U should be able to see the version number of the bios. and then just google it. Not sure though, I'm a noob
