I'm almost set on buying a Dell XPS M170 but am not sure because of the following reasons:

    1) Rumor of the new Core Duo XPS coming out early next month.

    2) 800x600 (only supported res for adventure games I play) might look incredibly blurred on the WUXGA screen.

    3) 32-bit CPU might not last 2 1/2 - 3 yrs (time I'm planning to keep the comp).

    4) 1920x1200 res on a 17" screen = microscopic text..

You guys think I should be buying now? Convince me. ;)

If you can wait, just wait. If you need the laptop right away, then buy it. There's always going better coming along so if it's not urgently needed, then wait a while.

Theres nothing really wrong with going with the XPS M170 now. Not many games take advantage of Dual Core, so for the majority of titles out there the M170 with a 770 will outperform any Core Duo, unless of course there patched for Multi Proc.

800x600 will actually look fine as long as you don't stretch the image. Unless your trying to read 6pt text at 800x600 its not going to cause to much of an issue. Cleartype actually makes alot of the text headaches go away as well.

As for 1920 x 1200 resolution being tiny... I used 1920 x 1200 on a 15".. and that was fine :p There are plenty of work arounds that exist if you find the text is to small, However I find no problems reading the text.

Actually my girlfriend made this same argument and bought a WXGA screen. When I purchased my 9300 with WUXGA I never mentioned the resolution when I was using it and she was able to see just fine. When I confronted her with it her whole argument was blown out of the water.

Granted if you have horrifyingly bad vision than WUXGA might not be for you :p

As for the XPS Core Duo if it comes out next month err.. its not going to have a 64 Bit CPU since Core Duo is 32 Bit :)

If you want to wait for 64 Bit and dual core you'll have to:
    A. Get one of the existing AMD X-2 huge Clevo boxes
    B. Wait for a Turion 64 Dual Core
or C. wait 'till near the end of the year for Merom

The new XPS Core Duo won't be a February launch, I think they told us something more like March.

Guys, just wanted to let y'all know that I've decided on getting an Inspiron 9400. Well, no point in spending such a premium I guess. Thanks for all the replies.

hmm...It is really annoying when you buy a laptop and a newer version comes out like a month later..so I reccomend you buy a laptop as soon as it is released. I made the same mistake with my Minidisc player. Try looking at the dell Inspiron E1705. It does have an Intel Dual Core processor...around 2Ghz. It is powerful and cool.. I would get one...and It's great value for money at $1399 compared to the XPS...

The E1705 is the same as the 9400, which is what he got.
