The Dell XPS notebooks have always stood out as being Dell's top-of-the-line offerings, but I don't see very much difference between the new Inspirons and the new XPS.

Sure most people feel that the new XPS m1330 looks nicer (I personally think its rather ugly, but then I liked the look of the m1210 that no one else seemed to find appealing), but does it actually perform any better?

Dell XPS m1330 offers LED backlighting, that's a definate plus, and it comes in a slightly smaller package (13.3" instead of 14.1"), but what else?

They both offer the same graphics and processor options, and I *think* they both offer the same RAM options (up to 4GB).

I'm considering buying one of these laptops very soon, but I'm not sure which to go for. I configured both of them and came out with similar prices. I'm trying to figure out why the XPS is supposed to better, I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

The following are my personal opinions about the two:

    Inspiron 1420:
Pros - Anti-Glare Screen, more stylish (personal opinion)
Cons - 14.1 instead of the preferred 13.3

    XPS m1330:
Pros - 13.3 instead of 14.1, LED backlighting
    Cons - Glossy screen only

So... what sets these apart really? Am I missing something? Will the same Graphics Card work better for some reason on the XPS system?

Also... the LED option. Sony uses glossy screens on its SZ models, but I can still see those fairly well as opposed to other glossy screens. Is that because Sony uses the LED lighting? Or do they just have a better glossy finish? Or what?

If LED will make this laptop viewable, I'd almost certainly buy it, but if it will look similar to the m1210 screen... forget it.

How is LED going to affect the glare and/or reflection from the screen? I deemed the m1210 completely unusable solely because of the glare, and I don't want to make the same mistake again.

    Cheers,
    CT

According to a Dell XPS M1330 First Look Review review,

Basically when you buy an XPS system you are paying for styling(the m1330 is pretty), quality(the xps line should better then the budget inspiron line), and premiums like the LED screen and media keys wiht led backlight, and in this case the size(13.3)

Right, but what I'm getting at is what makes the XPS line better? If all the specs are the same, when why is one better than the other? Are they using subpar parts in the consumer line? Why is it better?

    HDMI port on the XPS
Look is clearly much much sexier (of course, that's not about performance...)
build quality is probably better on the XPS

Of course that will probably not make it work faster. If you just want performance, go for the 1420. some people care a lot about the look and build quality, they will consider the XPS more then.

You also get special XPS tech support which I hear is a lot better than the average Dell support.
