I need to know if its worth still buying one of these due to the fact it's coming to the final quater of the year and I don't want to wait for dell to upgrade the XPS1710 with a 8x variant and it not performing as well as the 7x variant, or find out that if i buy one now the new dell xps will outperform it by a considerable amount.

I plan on going for this laptop to play games - I might buy a 22" screen and watch/record TV through that using a USB tuner also, as I've always wanted todo that.

I need a laptop thats going to last atleast 2 -3 years, I play alot of games, mostly WoW and FPS games like CS, but would like to play some of the new games out at the moment also.

Reason I need a laptop thats powerful is cos I am moving from flat to flat alot and having bulky pc means its difficult to easily move around. The laptop will also be needed for music and watching dvd's, maybe music editing also but i'll have to buy a external SC for that anyway.

I would strongly caution against investing in the XPS 1710 when it sorely needs the Santa Rosa update (and perhaps new chassis).

an update for the XPS1710 isn't expected for several months (confirmed to me by a kind enough dell salesman)
    that's the reason i went for a Rock Xtreme 770 =)

I just ordered one. Got a nice $500 discount applied to my order for using a dell prefered account.

You can play the waiting game FOREVER with technology.

Ordered it on 7/22 it's suppose to ship 7/30. Hopefully it'll ship sooner.

UK has that 10% discount code which comes to an end at the end of the month - this prompted me to wonder if a new version would be anounced begining of August, but if the rep at Dell said no, then I may just jump onto the bandwagon, and bag me one of these bad boys - besids, as I understand it Santa Rosa isn't any faster, it simply guzzles less power (as do those new screens too). And since the XPS 1710 isn't really a portable laptop, more of a desktop replacement, and will probably be permanently plugged in, then I can't see any benefit of the new chip and screen, the only benefit could be if a nice directx 10 card (better than the current batch) is inlcuded. Got a company bonus burning a hole in my pocket.
