So I placed an order for an xps m1730 on 9/11/2008 after reading lots of reviews and pros / cons ( Lots of information on this forum especially, thanks guys) but I'm starting to get frustrated with the seemingly lack of progress on dells part. My order status has shown In Production since the day of my order. No matter who I call at Dell they basically just tell me the same thing that email did. My estimated delivery date is 10/07/2008 but I'm doubting somehow that it'll be here on time since it's been in the same build status for nearly a month! Have any of you had any luck calling and asking for specifics on order details? i.e. why has it taken this long?

All of the systems I've ordered from Dell, have always been delivered before the EDD, typically 1-2 weeks before. I guess the must be waiting parts, I know some of the coloured wings have been causing delays, infact they have even removed some of the colour options from there website.
I would also not pay too much attention to the online status, they often dont update them, and next time you look its jumped straight to despatched.

Im in the same boat you are. I ordered mine (grey) on 9/15 when they were having the sale and have a ship date of 10/6. It has shown "in production" since I ordered it. Im trying to be patient and will call if it hasnt shipped on 10/6. I think some of the colors are backordered grey being one of them.

That was the exact problem with my first order. i canceled it and went with Sapphire Blue. Dell told me that Smoke Grey was on backorder so what they did was upgraded me from 3 to 5 shipping to Overnight shipping and additional discounts for the trouble with the first order. So i saved about $300 from my original order My estimated ship date is 10/10/08. -
Wow of all the parts to be waiting on, body parts are not one of them. The sad part is I was thinking about painting the "wings" gold to go for a black /gold laptop theme. ****it

I also ordered on 9/15 with an ESD of 10/7, grey. According to Dell none of the parts are on backorder and they still estimate a ship date of 10/7, but i don't know if I believe em.

This is what their email said to me when I asked about it:
Dear Rj Nickerson,
Thank you for contacting Dell.
As I have checked our records I see that the XPS M1730 order is in production as there is some parts shortage which is causing the delay.
The estimated delivery date is 10/7/08 and every effort is being made to complete your order.

I talked to a Dell rep today and was told there was a 25 day lead time on the grey color from when I ordered it so hopefully the 10/6 date will be a good date for shipping although it does say estimated. My next option would be to get one off the outlet.

Hello fellow M1730 fans. Sorry that my first post is a bummer but I wanted to share my HUGE frustration with Dell. Original order 9/9, est ship date 10/1, On 10/1, I receive an email with revised est ship date 10/29. You guessed it the grey LCD cover delay, customer service offered no assurance of parts availability if I switched colors. Basically told me "you could wait, we cant promise no further delays or you could cancel the order". Nice one Dell !!

Uh Oh this is what I was afraid of. Im going to be taking a serious look at the 1730s in the outlet I guess. I have found some at about the price I would be paying but getting a few more options.

good luck and hope and pray you get a good lcd in it.. i have been through 7 now... and many others have had issues as well. personally id go through the outlet so you can pick the unit with the lcd you want..

So I phoned up Customer Support on the 12th September and explained my situation and they told me that everyone was having the same problems and suggested that I do it over the phone. However I wasn’t able to complete the order because my card kept getting rejected! I had to phone the bank to resolve the issue and found out that a restriction had been put on my card because of the recent failed orders I had placed with DELL! Anyway once that was sorted out I finally managed to make the order over the phone. BUT NO, MY PROBLEMS DID NOT END THERE! Even though my order had gone through there was still a problem.
Apparently the part that was “End of life” was the smoke grey colour which I had chosen and they waited 1 WEEK TO INFORM ME WHEN MY ORDER WAS DUE TO ARRIVE ON 29th September! So I had to choose another colour and my new estimated date was 3rd October. Well guess what 3rd October has passed and I’m still in PHASE 3 with a new “ESTIMATED” date of 14th October! DELL IS BY FAR THE MOST UNRELIABLE COMPANY THAT I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE LAST TIME I WILL BUY FROM THEM! F*****g SCUM!
AND DO YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY TAKES THE F*****G P**S? IF IT WASNT FOR THAT STUPID ERROR I WOULD HAVE RECEIVED IT BY NOW IT’S BEEN 2 F*****G MONTHS ALREADY MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE CANCELED IVE HAD ENOUGH OF THEIR BS EXCUSES! -

Yes mine was due to ship on Monday but dont think it will be happening. I havent cancelled the order yet. I might wait til I get the one from the outlet and see what kind of shape it is in.

I'll call them first thing on monday and see if any of their customer service monkeys can tell me if they're blowing smoke here or if they actually plan to ship in the next few days. I could wait a couple of days, but another 2-3 weeks is impossible. Arg this is frustrating.

before you ordered it you would get the service tag from the outlet then you could have run that through dell.com and it would tell you what screen it was..did you make note of the service tag? if so lmk and i can check for you to see what screen it will be

A good quality screen is very important to me. Hopefully the one I get will be alright. THis is one of the reasons Im concerned about buying from the outlet. Of course I guess you can have the same problems with new ones too. I have one of the IBM T43p's with the IPS screen which is hard to beat so Im already spoiled.

So I talked to about 8 different reps today, I called in being polite and explained that I wanted to know about the delay to my order and each one said please hold for a moment, and then transferred me to someone new. So eventually I got to a slightly helpful rep and they said I could actually just change my order to Crimson Red and that it would be built and sent out. So figners crossed that's what I went with, we'll see if it works out or if they were feeding me bs to shut me up.
Seriously Dell has horrible customer service, I work for a pretty well known company who is JD Powers and Assoc. certified in customer service and now I know why. If our service was anything like Dell's we'd be out of work -
Yes I just got the "order delayed" letter today. So im going to cancell and stick with the outlet one that I ordered and see how that is.
Yes Dell customer service is pure torture to deal with., I hate even calling them and maybe this is what Dell wants... less phone calls. I have been buying from Dell since 2000 and have watched the company decline in many ways.
Now the latest they are moving all of their factories overseas so Im done with Dell. This makes them just like all of the other large computer companies. Nothing special plus with the lousy overseas customer service on top of it. I dont need it!!!! -

Wow it's pretty much the same, I called yesterday and they told me my order had been canceled. Then a "supervisor" told me that it was just an internal thing and that my crimson system should be here in 5-12 days or something along those lines. I don't know why but I'll give them a call tonight to see if the story changes. Why I bother call I have no idea, it honestly just stresses me out.

Wow it sounds like even changing the color is taking a long time.
Im taking a chance getting one from the outlet which is supposed to be here tomorrow. I already figured out that Im getting one with a Sharp screen.
Anyway should be interesting to see what kind of condition it is in. -
i ordered my m1730 on sep 5. shipping date of the sep. 26th come the 27th no computer! they called said they smoky gray had a delay told them to change it to blue, the said blue had a delay, told them to change it to any other.... guy called me back, said no matter what color i order my shipping date is now October 27th nearly 2 months after i placed the order... should have gotten a mac book pro at this point... no warning, before ordering no phone call! the rep said they ahve been back ordering for nearly 6 months!

Well I got my grey 1730 from the outlet and it is in like new condition. Took about a week after placing the order.
I got an LG screen and Im not too crazy about it. Not very accurate colors and almost impossible to calibrate. -
