Ok, after much persuation, I have decided to choose a Dell as my next laptop. However, I don't know whether to get the 9300 or the XPS Gen 2. Is the difference just all looks, or does the XPS have something that the 9300 doesn't?
Thanks

The XPS does have better looks, yes.
Also, it has the GeForce Go6800 Ultra, not just a regular Go6800.
In addition, you get specialized support with an XPS.
And the XPS2 comes standard with higher end hardware than the 9300 as well.
Hope that helps. -
Do you think that all of the XPS's extra features would be justified by $650 extra bucks?
-
It's hardly $650 extra if you apply the 40% off coupon. The difference sinks to a couple hundred, and that's well justified if you're using the laptop for games.
-
Really? How do you apply the 40% coupon to the XPS? Whenever I try to it won't let me. I can only get the 35% off in.
-
You have to wait until Dell issues them, sometimes the coupon only applies to certain machines.
-
There's virtually no difference between the 9300 and XPS except for a faster graphics card, more hard drive choices (such as the 100 GB 7200 rpm drive), and some cosmetic effects (such as LED lights).
-
yea...and if u don't use the 40% off coupon...and in some cases the 35% off coupon...then i don't see y u should spend more money on a lil faster graphics card...lol...i'd use that extra money and get other accessories..like speakers if u don't have some...or a nice gaming mouse...or more ram or external hard drive...or w/e

with proper cooling the Geforce go 6800 has actually posted similar and almost identical clock speeds as the geforce go 6800 ultra. This is from a very informative site called lowlymarines FAQ. The site states:
I mean I honestly wouldn't spend the extra 650 for the xps 2. I believe it's just show and no go. But that's my opinion. Just stick with inspiron 9300. U can max out just about every inspiron 9300 customization and it'll still be 500 dollars cheaper than a midgrade xps 2. Just my opinion. -
yup...i agree with u all the way -

I'd agree with everyone else: spec out an i9300 until you get to the XPS price point, you will get much more for your money.
Personally, I think that the XPS is a little too flashy, although it does look nice.

Yeah, I think I'll just spec out the 9300 rather than getting the XPS.
I was going to get the XPS for the looks, but I told myself that 650 bucks isn't worth it.

The XPS also has better speakers. I believe that it has a miniature subwoofer in it.

I just went to a Dell kiosk/info center at a local mall today, and tested the 9300's/XPS's speakers. THEY BOTH SOUND HORRIBLE!! My HP zv6000's speakers sound way better than both, and are much louder, even without a subwoofer! I beginning to be doubtful whether to even consider the 9300 for my desktop replacement. I thought that the 9300 and XPS would both have better speakers than my zv6000.

HP has always put the best speakers in their notebooks - I've yet to find something that compares, except for a Toshiba Qosmio.
But hey, nobody buys a laptop for its speakers! -
I know, but it's just annoying. Paying 3 Grand for a laptop that has worse speakers than one half its cost? What's up with that?
-
you're gonna spend $3,000 on a dell 9300??...u must be out of your mind!!...just use the coupons!!!!!!!!!...and just get external speakers

The difference is that XPS comes with a 6800 ultra which offers a little more video performance than the 9300's 6800 card which can still play anything you throw at it. The XPS only comes with a WUXGA glossy panel where the 9300 offers a matte finished WXGA panel with lower resolution which means text is more readable, it is an ultrasharp (non glossy). The XPS has gigabit lan the 9300 does not, but who's wireless goes over 100 megs anyhow?? Its a nice feature, but not practical for most users at this point in time. The xps runs a bit warmer and burns the battery alot faster than the 9300.
So unless you are an extreme gamer, the 9300 is definitely the way to go. Both are great systems. -
NOT SO, the 9300 and XPSGen2 have great speakers and subwoofer that really extends the octaves to better quality than Ive heard on most laptops. -
-
If you already have a ZV6000, why get another laptop anyhow? I urge you to have a good desktop as your home base as they last alot longer and are much cheaper to upgrade and soo much more versatile with the exception of portability ofcourse. Its your money ofcourse but having a perfectly good laptop and buying another one just doesnt make any sense to me at all. -
buy 9300 with full accesorie better is like 2000$ = the price for xps with basical accesories.

Wow, all the questions about the Inspiron 9300 and the XPS and you went and got the zv6000 anyways. I don't blame you, it is a pretty good machine for a small package. However, I don't agree with you on your comment about the speakers. My friend has the HP ZD8000 and his brother has the zv6000. Both are pretty good systems but all three of us agree that my XPS's speakers can go louder and clearer than theirs, and the ZD8000 had the best notebook speakers I have ever heard until I got my XPS.
Since you purchased the zv6000, I take it you are not a gamer. -
dont listen to 17" Toshiba laptop speakers, becuase you'll cry how bad the XPS is.
-
I think it all depends on what youre going to use it for. Depending on how you configure them, they are very similar computers. If youre a gamer, and you plan to use it at home/friends/LAN to game, you probably want to get the XPS2, since it has a better graphics card/better network card/better gaming capabilities/etc. And it has cooler, younger looks.
If youre a business man, I think you would look pretty funny taking the XPS2 to a meeting, and bringing it to work. The 9300 is geared more towards the older customer/business customer, although you can get quite a powerful gaming system if you configure it the right way.
So, what Im trying to say is, if Youre really into gaming, get the XPS2, and if you plan on using it for work, get the 9300. -
If you're using a laptop for gaming, get a good set of headphones and don't worry about the speakers! If the game requires you to hear your suroundings, then you either want a awesome suround sound (no chance with any laptop speakers) or a good set headphones.
I use these with my 9300 for UT2k4. If you want smaller ones, try these
