A friend of mine said he ordered the top of the line dell xps 1730 and spent $6000 on it and has 16gb of ram.

I called dell and they said i cant do anymore than 4gb in anyone of there laptops..

My friend tried to explain to me how he has 16gb but it makes no sense..

Does anyone here now how this is possible or if its all bull ****

if its possible, you would have to be running a 64bit OS (Vista or otherwise) to make use of memory over 4gb.

Even Vista 32bit cannot access past 3.5gb RAM.

Did he get the 16GB from them, or do some 'modifying' afterwards?

How many RAM slots does the laptop have even? I'm not even sure there are any 4GB single sticks available yet.

Bull****. They don't make 8 GB DIMMS. 4 GB ones just were released, and are still at the "arm and leg plus first child" pricing.

You should just go along with it. Whenever someone tells me they spent $6k on a laptop, I just point and laugh.

Available to the average consumer, you mean. I'm sure those with contacts in higher places might be able to have access to those.

That said, I kinda doubt this. If 16GB were available at that level, then we'd have some sort of trickle-down available to us better than 4GB.

Your friend's a liar, plain and simple. 8gb sodimm's don't exist (2x8=16). The most the dell can do is 8gb (4x2gb), and even that would be uproariously expensive. Unless the 1730 has 4 sodimm slots, which I doubt, it's not possible. Also, if he was ordering it direct from dell, they don't offer the 4gb sodimms, so it would have to be an aftermarket upgrade.

Even if he had 16GB of RAM and Vista 64 installed, I'm pretty sure the MOBO wouldn't be able to utilize it all.

The point about 6k on a laptop is fabulous - a good car can be had for that kind of money.

I don't see myself ever spending more than $2k, MAYBE $2500 on a laptop.

Not to mention the 965 chipset has a limitation of up to 8GB of memory.

Just show your friend this thread, have him read it, then after he's about to say something else stupid.. punch him in the face. He should get your message pretty darn clearly then.

Not only is 16GB limited in terms of hardware, but Vista wouldn't be able to use that much RAM.

Actually... if I recall, 64Bit Vista can handle somewhere in the area of 186 or 188Gb ram given the right hardware.

I will try to find where I read this but it has to do with the 64Bit upper limit.

Sorry...128Gb as stated and detailed in the attached:

Tell him you have 4 quad core processors with 16GB each and he isnt qualified to be tea-bagged by you with his rinky dink rig.

Also.... Dont be surprised if he has 4Gb internally and is confusing his flash drive/sd drive size as "physical ram" as well if he is using it as...ooops I forgot the name here...duuuh.

    Readyboost thats it...ya!

They don't even make that many 16 GB desktop motherboards yet. Do they even have 8 GB laptop motherboards yet? 16 GB would be extremely hard to use, I have only been able to use 6 of my 8 GB so far.

Lithus thats hilarious, (almost as funny as the current presidential elections, HA WHAT A JOKE)

and that chart Les provided, Which i have seen else where (on the Microsofts web page as well) says that it can handle and absurd amount of memory.

'now dont attack me for this one, because iam not sure, thus be the reason for asking'

could he possibly be using one of those great big GB flash drives and allocating a certain amount to windows ready boost? would this give him that 16 GB of ram. ( i know where talking about dimms, but in the original post i thought that i just read ram, also i am not sure exactly how windows ready boost works because i cant use it.)

Never mind Les types and thinks faster than I!

But would this readyboost program show 16 gb?

I dont think readyboost shows as additional application memory because you do not really run apps out of it. Its more like more memory for pagefile/swapfile/superfetch

Readyboost doesnt show as memory but many misunderstand its function believing it to be additional ram.

rofl, 16GB RAM in a Dell laptop!
I dont know why you even considered whether he was tellin gthe truth or not! Its an obvious lie. Dell notebooks dont come with any more the 4GB RAM, since they only have 2 slots, and 2GB RAM modules are the largest you can get.

Tell your friend to take a running jump.

He will probably take delivery of the laptop and claim that his 16GB of RAM makes Crysis run at 100fps at 1920x1200 with 32X anti-aliasing. In fact, he's got a patch that makes Crysis render in ray-trace mode by using the quad-core processor and GPU's in parallel.

    What a little tit.
