just had a chat with a tech online trying to get media direct 3.0 to install on vista and their response was
We will request you not to install vista or any product of vista on the laptop as it has not been launched and it may harm your laptop."![]()
well this doesn't seem right

It won't 'harm' your laptop permanently, however vista is still pre-release and they don't have any obligation to support beta software.
-
yea i know but according to tech support this is the number for vista tech support
1-866-634-7426
and the e-mail
[email protected]
they also say everything will work by feb 1 we will see
me thinks its gonna be a tech support nightmare -
Yea it won't harm your laptop. I know cuz I've installed Vista. The main problem is that the support and software compatibilities are not fully integrated with each other. I heard the final version would be better tho.

Not to the public. -
True.
I do have my Ultimate Key and my Business key too. But, we're business customers, so that helps.
But, Vista won't harm your Laptop. It may kill mediadirect funtionality -- in which case you're at the mercy of dell figuring it out. You have until Jan 30th until Dell will be obligated to have done anything. -
I finally got a semi answer after 5 hours of shuffling about the problem is that media direct does not recognize the kernal and will have to be re written at lrast that is what the tech support guys in Austin tx. told me about 1 hour ago so its possible a fix should be comming
sometime I got vista on my msdn supscription and myst say that so far business and home premium seem like the all around best so far ultimate uses about 20%more memory
jim -
Ultimate uses a bit more, but 20% seems high to me.
But .. our VL/SPLA keys are for business, so that's what we'll end up using anyway. -
honestly business imho runs better than ultimate and home premium would be great for home ultimate just has too much candy added for me

The benfit I saw in Ultimate (especially for a laptop) are the Media capability, burning, etc. built in without added software -- and the ability to add to a domain all the while.

I have been running Vista Ultimate for about four days. I have not noticed any issues at all. But I can testify to the fact that Vista Ultimate seems to take a lot of memory. I'm really glad that I got the 2 gigs of ram and the 7900gs, otherwise I'd be hurting. Right now with just Opera Browser and Mozilla open I'm about 40% memory usage. That is big difference over XP.

I've been running Ultimate x86 and plan on switching over to Ultimate x64 this weekend.
Vista is way more responsive on my M1710 than XP, I love it. -
I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. Funny thing is I had gotten the Trend Micro PC-Cillin security through Dell. But it won't install on Vista. Now I'm trying to find a freeware Anti-virus program that will run on Vista. AVG won't run on x64

That is because the kernel is now locked down...I remember hearing that Kapernsky (I think I spelled it right) has a Vista client that works.

computer associates avg avast all work on vista

I just hope in the final version they cut down the ram usage. I would even take it if Vista final offers 300mb ram usage.

I think the TrendMicro Internet Security I have will work. I checked the Trend Micro Website and they say they will be offering an upgrade to version 14. What I don't understand is I got my laptop early December. If version 14 was already out why would Dell give me version 12, any ideas or anyone with the same complaint.
