I am trying to get this 9300 going, i ordered a battery from dell and 2 gigs of memory for, the memory part went in fine, but the battery is giving me lots of trouble.
when i plug it in i get the power light that stays solid, then the battery symbol next to it will flash, and the battery w/ the lightning bolt through it, doesnt do anything.
now whether or not the battery is it the computer will turn on be functional, when the power adapter is plugged in.
there are no yellow exclamation marks in the device manager, and the computer seems to reed what it is and it says it is online, however it does not seem to be charging.
when i go to the control panel/ performance and manteninance/ power options/ the power meter tab
i get a picture of a battery inside of a square with a red 'X' going through it. and a #1 above it, and a 0% next to it. and it says current power source AC power
Total battery power remaining: 0%
and when i push the button on the back of the battery itself, i get no reaction.
does anyone know whats going on, if i did something wrong, or if the battery is just a dud, if thats the case im kinda mad, cuz it wasnt cheep and it was supposed to be brand new!
i have not checked the bios to see what that says at the moment, but i am going to right now.
so anyone with any suggestions or input would help thanks guys!!!

the bios says that the battery is functioning normally, and it says that it is in idle mode?! i dont know if this helps, but sue is a pain in the butt!

OK, I'll try to help. The Bios battery screen should say Idle if you are connected to AC power and the battery is charged to 100%. If you do not have the AC power plugged in then the bios should say discharging. If the AC power is plugged in and the battery is not at 100% then it should say charging. What level of charge does the Bios tell you that the battery has? Remove the battery and verify that the Bios recognizes that the battery has been removed. What size AC Apater does the Bios say you have attached? It will list this right under the battery graphic in the bios battery info screen. There should be a menu in the bios right under battery info that says battery health, what does it say about your battery?
Unfortunately, I am leaning toward you may have a bad battery, but lets get answers to these questions first.
And just on a side note, the symbol that lights up between the power indicator and the battery with the lightning bolt is the hard disk activity light. You refered to it as a battery light in your first post. -
You need to check this:
1. Check in the BIOS the status of the AC Adapter, if it says "unknown" you will need a new AC Adapter.
2. If the battery is brand new and you were having the same issue with the other battery then this might be an issue with AC or Mobo.
3. Check the battery LED indicator in the system, if it flashes 4 times amger and 1 time Green it means it has a "temporary battery failure" and needs to cool down, if the battery is already cold then again, check if the other battery has the same symptoms.
4. Follow this decision tree for troubleshooting from support.dell.com: http://support.dell.com/support/top...d=534EA5ADFCE54EB18C1F59AFED782591&doclang=en -
thanks for your help guys i do appreciate it. the bios says that the battery is healthy and the windows thing says that the battery is good to go (is working properly).
and last night after fooling around with it a little bit, i ran a diagnostics check and it came back and told me that the ac adapter is bad!
however i kind of have a new question now, i understand that these things can and probably will go bad (everything has the potential to go bad) but would this AC adapter still work to power the computer but not charge the battery, the computer is still under warranty until October of this year, and we had the mother board replaced by a dell technicion a (id say about 6 months ago... or so)
after reading this (if it helps) any other thoughts? suggestions?
thanks again, for responding.
