Has anyone done this, or know of a guide to show the steps?
I found a guide on swapping various equipment ids in the whitelist, but when I tried to do the process on a XPS12 9Q23 I ran into two problems. Firstly, I can't find my existing wlan card id in the dumped bios files at all, and secondly I have to replace a PCI id with a USB id and I'm not 100% sure of the format with usb device ids...
Any ideas?
Thanks

I have never heard of Dell blocking hardware with their laptops before I have been using them since 2008 (Vostro 1400) 2010 (Studio 1558) 2012 (Vostro 3450 and Vostr 1400 (new)) and never had hardware not work properly.
Device ID are text files (inf) so adding your device ID to the list for the driver should work. -
It's somewhat well known that WWAN/WLAN devices are whitelisted in various laptop manufacturers' BIOS... I didn't really realize Dell did it too, until I tried to upgrade the intel wlan card to an option wwan/wlan card. Most people won't run into a problem because almost all laptop upgrades are HDD/SSD and ram... and those aren't whitelisted, etc. Basically, in my case if I put the option card in the mini pcie slot and try to turn on the laptop, it lights up but the screen stays blank. If I turn on the laptop without the card in and then put it in while its turned on, it works fine. HP laptops will give a warning, apparently Dell's just don't turn on at all.
The device ID's I'm talking about have nothing to do with the driver inf files, they're contained in the bios code modules themselves...
Anyways, I was making a stupid mistake when I couldn't find my wlan id before... I forgot to search case insensitive (or use the right case) when I searched the hexdumps of the bios modules.zerosource likes this.
Dell bios whitelist check removal.
