I received my new Inspiron 17r (with an Intel Core i5-2410M, 8GB of RAM and 750GB hard drive) on Friday. It isn't fancy but it's relatively cheap for what I need. I only use my computer for the internet, microsoft office, music, photos and videos... nothing too intensive like computer games. It seems to be running perfectly.
I used Belarc Advisor to look at my computer profile... It says that I have a model # WD7500BPVT-75HXZT1 750GB Hard Drive. I looked on the web and found it to be a Western Digital Scorpio Blue Hard Drive. The problem is that the Scorpion Blue is only 5400rpm but I paid for a 7200rpm hard drive...
I've heard horror stories about Dell customer service... So what is the process for getting the proper hard drive such as a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB 7200rpm? Do I have to send the laptop back to have it replaced?
I've downloaded a bunch of things on this hard drive already... Will they compensate me for my inconvenience? What could I ask for (and receive)?
I'll be giving customer service a call but I was just wondering what my options are...
Thanks for you help!

In looking at the Inspiron 17R on Dell's website, I'm not seeing any option for a 7200 RPM hard drive. Take a closer look at your invoice or post a copy of it here (with your personal information edited out/deleted).

Here's the link (dell Canada) for the computer:

Under components it says 750GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive -
I guess I worried over nothing...
I called Dell customer service. After 45 minutes of comfirming my problem, including a remote access to my computer, Dell gave me 2 options:
1. Replace the computer with a new one with the 7200RPM hard drive but it would take 13-15 business days.
2. Have a technician come to my house in the next 3 days and replace the hard drive with a new one and replace the OS and all programs.
I chose option #2. I didn't feel like being sent another wrong computer and also the time was a factor...
I just wonder how many people were sent the wrong components and don't even know it? I found out just by dumb blind luck.... -

Honestly I think it was an honest mistake, apparently it happens a fair amount in the XPS 15 with people ordering the 1080p screen and they get the 720p screen (now there is a real crime).

I agree... it was probably just a mistake. The technician came to my place the day after I called customer service about the error (TIP: call Dell before 3pm for next day service). He replaced the hard drive with the proper one and installed Windows for me. The packaging said the hard drive was refurbished but it was new. I used HD Pro to check the newly installed drive and it's working perfectly. The only annoying thing was that the technician left after the Windows install and I was stuck downloading the drivers for the computer. It was my first time doing that but it was pretty easy and didn't take too long.
The problem I have with the Inspiron 17R is that the hard drive in this computer is buried in the computer. There is no easy access. You have to remove the keyboard, palm rest and a few other things to get to the hard drive... I won't even try to install a new hard drive in this computer! Actually the technician BROKE my plastic palm rest trying to put it all back together again! Luckily, the technician will come back to my place and replace the broken palm rest tomorrow... -

Almost all new Dell's are like that. N5010/N4010/N5030 had the hard drive underneath the palmrest. The palmrest isn't that difficult to remove, getting a flat head screwdriver or using just enough force and it should just come out. Newest Sandy Bridge 1xR series have it underneath the motherboard (sort of ridiculous).
