Have not seen this question asked yet, or at least can't get the search terms right on it-

Does anyone know if Dell has a preferred system designer or builder for their product line? I know most laptops are actually made to spec by one of the big three Taiwanese manufacturers, but does someone know if it's consistently been one over the others for the last few years?

To summarize, does Dell just have one design/build shop for their notebook line or do they contract out with multiple suppliers?

Im not sure if this answers your question but I believe Asus makes the notebook cases for dell, apple, and a few other manufacturers. I could be wrong but I believe Asus is the only manufacturer of dell's notebook cases.

    curious ...

i was told that my Inspiron notebook was assembled in austin, texas. so Taiwan (ASUS) makes the shell, and somewhere in south korea (Samsung, LG) or japan (sharp), we get the displays? and all that gets shipped to the states?

so why does my box say "computer made in malaysia"?

Because Inspirons are built in Malaysia and shipped to the distribution center here in the US to be shipped to the owner. That's why it sits in that one stage for like a week when you order one. That stage includes its shipment from Malaysia to the US which takes 3-5 days.
