Does anyone know if you can specify a non-glare (matte) screen for any of the laptops when ordering one? Almost all of them are specified on line with glossy screens. I'm especially interested in the Vostro. I just went to the store to compare screens and I was very disappointed with the glare of the screens. If you've never compared them, it's a very glaring difference (pun intended.) Honestly, I think I could shave in the glossy ones and the matte screens I could actually see the displayed content without distraction. I'm surprised that there seems to be no choice anymore. In my environment, I don't think a glossy screen would even be useful without a lot of strain. I couldn't even see what the "improvement" is in them, although I know a lot of people do like them. I just don't understand the lack of choice. You see the same trend in LCD TV's.

I was very skeptical about negative comments I heard about the new screens, but when I actually saw one, I realized how bad it would be at home or office in a lighted environment.

You can get a matte, just not in the higher resolution.

yes, for the Vostro specifically, but all the latitudes have matte screens for all resolutions that can be configured with that laptop.

I was looking closer at the Vostro offers. The Vostro 1000 says "anti-glare display" with no options given. The 1500 options say
    1. "LCD display (included in price)" or
    2. "LCD display w/Truelife (add $0)"

So, is the 1000 "anti-glare" display and the default 1500 display the same display with different descriptions? If so, it looks like you have to specify a Truelife if you want it, with no extra cost. This would make much more sense, especially for office-oriented models.

Yes. TrueLife = glossy screen. So the "default" 1500 display is matte, but if you want a higher resolution screen, you either have to brave the glossy screen (if you want a vostro) or pick a different computer :(
