    Hello!

We have a Dell e1705 with 1gb of memory as two 512mb chips. I'd like to upgrade the memory. I understand that 32bit windows can see up to 3.25gb of memory or so (and even though that notebook doesn't technically support over 2gb, I've read lots of posts that state that it will recognize more). So, my question is this. I seem to remember that the "old school" way of upgrading memory was to do it in two identical chips (ie 2x1gb). But I thought that I've read that having different size chips is no longer a problem. I'm considering replacing just one of the 512mb chips to a single 2gb so that I'd end up with 2.5gb in memory. Is this a problem or will it result in decreased performance or other problems?

    Thanks in advance!

    All the best,
    Rae

Using a 512MB DIMM and a 2GB DIMM should not cause any problems. There are small performance penalties for using mismatched DIMMs, but they are unnoticeable in practice.
