I have read that the Dell 9400 has an alloy case, and the e1705 does not. I thought these were the same laptops??? any help would be welcome.

    thanks

I was under the assumption that the two were identicle, I have no reasons to doubt this either.

I'll move this to the Dell forum we have for you, so some Dell E1705/9400 users can chime.

I also thought they were the same, just a different name.

Just like the E1505/6400, the XPS M140/630M, etc. I thought they were the same except for the availability of MCE OS and the price. Also, of course, the labeling.

They are the same laptops... just marketed via home or business sites, and unfortunately neither of them has an alloy case.

    from cnet: on the 9400

    Design
The Inspiron 9400's design is nearly identical to the Inspiron 9300's. Crafted out of sturdy and stylish magnesium alloy and measuring 394 x 288 x 41.5mm. Our test unit weighed 3.6kg (4.2kg with its AC adapter) -- 100g lighter than the HP Pavilion dv8200. Still, the Inspiron 9400 is too heavy for regular travel

Yeah, the 9400 and E1705 are the exact same machines. The main difference is in terms of support. If you order the 9400, you have to order it thru small business, and you get better warranty support (supposedly, i don't have a small business laptop, so no first hand experiences).

Actually, I thought the screen casing for the e1705 (part facing up when closed) is magnesium alloy, for the purpose reducing the screen flex. The rest of it, minus a couple unconnected frame "things", is plastic. I have no idea what is going on with the 9400, b/c I don't have one.

The E1705/9400 are the same notebook as mentioned above. The lid (LCD) backing is magnesium alloy. The rest is pretty much plastic with the exception of most of the bottom I believe. I'll have to go look at the bottom of mine again..I know certain doors (memory) were metal I think. But the top is definately metal and there is no screen flex due to this.

The E1705/I9400 are the same notebook as mentioned above. It should be noted, however, that since the I9400 is a business notebook, you can't use Dell's coupons on it.
