Of course I did not order the windows disk from dell. If I wanted to get rid of all dells bs could I load windows xp from a disk my friend gave me? Or would I have lots of problems with dell drivers not being loaded? Neverminding the licence issues.

You can download/install the drivers after you install XP.

Depends, you may need another computer around to get the ethernet driver.

Or collect/burn all the drivers (ethernet, video, audio, etc) before you erase it.

Why not just call Dell's Tech Support and request the XP Disc. They'll send it to free of charge and within two business days.

The windows xp home disk that came with my Inspiron 6400, though printed with Dell branding, contained a completely vanilla install of XP. The only difference I've seen between the Dell disk and another disk, is that the other asks for your license key.

Also, you will not have any trouble getting drivers, provided that you have a wired connection, because whilst windows automagically configures the ethernet, it cant do the wireless.

Before format, download all the drivers you need from dell then burn them to a disk or USB drive. Then do the reinstallation.

IF you can't wait for Dell , borrow someone's disc with Window Media Center then if it ask for CD key, u can use one on ur computer.

I emailed Tech support. I had the XP MCE disk, because I paid for it...but I never received my backup for the Sonic Suite and MyDVD. Mentioned that in my e mail...received a confirmation within a couple of hours that I would receive two orders...two days later...I received two packages...Another Windows XP MCE disk, another Dell Applications disk, another Drivers Disk, Sonic Digital Suite 7, a backup to my Audigy Software, and a Dell Media Direct disk

More than I asked for...but now I have everything I would ever need to restore my machine
