I have an exchange coming in for an XPS M1530. Anyone know if it would be okay if I swapped the hard drive between system being replaced and the replacement? They systems and components are identical but I know Dell puts IDs on all the parts. Would they give me a hard time about it if the part was the same but not "the same"?

I don't think it would be a problem but you should double-check that.

They shouldn't give you a hard time about it. Go into a Dell chat and get confirmation, but according to my friend who works at dell, they do not track the specific serial numbers of parts in systems.

Yup you can. Someone suggested it to me, though my replacement drive was just as silent, quiet, and performed just as well so I just kept it. Its all good. ^_^

am i missing something here or do they send you the replacement before you have to send in the laptop you are not happy with?

    yes.

they will send u a replacement unit. after u receive the replacement, u put yur original unit into the same box yur replacement came in. make sure to look for the packing slip/sticker they provide so u can send it back without bein charged. if, for some reason, u did not receive a packing slip/sticker. just call them and they'll email u a print out slip.

You can do that, there will be no inconvenient about that, it is just a hard drive, and Dell value your information, so dont worry about that.

It shouldn't be a problem. I did something similar and there wasn't an issue with it.

Dell doesn't monitor what type of hard drive is in your laptop. Vista on the other hand will detect any significant hardware changes and will ask to re-activate it. If the replaced system has the same specs then there's no problem.
