I have a D430 that comes with an external CD/DVD RW drive. I wonder if it is possible to convert it into a USB writer so that it could be used on other computers? Did anyone tried that? Thanks :)

Providing you obtain a housing which supports USB or USB+Firewire Yes.
I got myy housing off ebay which came with a standard rom drive, just remove the rom drive and fitted my DVD burner. You may also need a DC PSU for it as when I was running just off USB supply I was getting drop outs from USB supply.

PS: have a look at this one
