Thinking about purchasing a dell notebook for college (for my son) but concerned about build quality. The notebook he currently has was passed on to him by yours truly (Inspiron 5000). I took great care of that notebook but it developed stress fractures in four places. My question is, Has Dell improved the quality of its notebook line? Is the Latitude D600 built to withstand everyday use better than the Inspiron line? Thanks for your input.

The Lattitude line is much better, but in general, I'm not very high on Dell's build quality right now. They've moved into more of a commodity market rather than trying to build high quality machines. This is fine if you want a lot of features for a low price, but you have to accept things like cheap cases and offshore tech support that can be awefull more often than good. Again, it really comes down to wanting Dell and not having a lot of money. I'd recommend Acer if you want something comparable on price, but better quality.

For durability, I think the latitude series is better than the Inspiron. But personally, I wouldn't purchase a Dell if you are looking for a sturdy case.

Unless your son can take the pressure of the laughable Dell Technical and Customer support, I would opt for a different brand. I know what stress cracks are I have onset diabetes but treat it with natural products, I was trained in this field from 1963-5 and took college courses in aromatherapy. It's Dell and how their un-empathetical ways your son will have to deal with or live with.

I hope your son fairs well in both college and more importantly his health without it a computer would due him no good, stay away from pharmaceutical companies chemical claims.
