So i didn't get the dell vista disk with my vostro 1500 so i emailed them and requested that disk. they asked what i was missing and i said i was only missing the vista disk because i wanted to wipe the dell partitions and reinstall vista...(i already had a vista disk from another machine and did this already, but i deserved to get it with this machine as well) well anyways i got my package in the mail today (next day air) and it contained all the vostro disks including the audigy HD cd with key on the back. YAY!

anyone else experience this as well?

    same for me
they mailed me Home Premium instead of Home Basic too, so I complained and they are shipping the software bundle to me again. Seems like I'm the only Vostro owner that actually want Home Basic over Home Premium.

well you wouldnt be able to use home premium. you still need the key which ISNT included on the cd...its only on your laptop. However the audigy HD is included with the key on the cd...so you can use it.

anyways i would just like to say that with the software it actually makes my creative live usb external usable with 5.1 and advanced features in vista. finally i found a solution to that problem!

    Congrats.

They sent me Vista Home Basic and I have Vista Home Premium.

Do they normally charge about $14.00 for these disks? The email said they were free, but I see a $14.00 charge on my account.

no they should be free if you did not get them origionally. the dell rep told me that my account would not be charged for them.

Just hung up with Dell. Looks like the charge was just for documentation and my account was not actually charged.

Also, they are sending out the correct Home Premium disk as requested.

Hopefully they slip in the Audigy disk. I probably should have asked, but oh well.

You still can use Home Premium, when you install it DOES NOT ask for a key ;)

Yeah but don't you have to activate it or something once everything running? I wouldn't know for sure but isn't that what they usually do?

its not. I've used Home Premium, Ultimate and Home Basic. Home Basic is my favorite.

Home Premium have 3 differences compared to Home Basic
    1) Home Premium uses Aero Glass and Home Basic uses Aero Express,, meaning Home Premium have a semi-transparent taskbar that works 5% of the time for me, so in other words useless.
    2) Home Premium have that utterly useless FLIP3D and Live Thumbnail.
    3) Home Premium have Media Center which I never use.

So Home Premium have 3 features that I don't use/like/want, so I'd rather take Home Basic and save some HD space.

Premium uses more HD space than Basic, have no real difference between the two, and Home Premium contains couple of utterly useless features that I don't want/need/use

don't say it only has 3 differences that only work 5% of the time. do research first. I've beta tested vista since the beginning (legally) and have had several versions since each of their launches, business, premium, ultimate, and basic. maybe your like a soccer mom and only uses an operating system for emailing pictures of your son's first goal, but for other users that aren't so closed minded about an operating system and give it a time to explore its features, don't go telling people that its useless. if your thinking of using vista home basic, use xp instead. if you want to use vista, use business or home premium.

I like Vista personally. I also like XP when it first came out and everyone hated it. I guess I just like operating systems (sometimes I even want a mac). I have played around with Linux a bit, but it just feels like it SHOULD be free.

Anyway, I am only bugging Dell for Vista CD because the computer should come with back ups. Honestly, I will put Ultimate on this machine when my 160 7200 drive gets here. I doubt I'll even use the Home Premium from Dell. The fact is, a computer should come with back up CDs.

I would never pay retail for Ultimate though, it's way over priced. I just get the full version for $45 from the Microsoft store.

For the basic everyday user Home Premium is, in my opinion the best. You can turn off the fancy stuff if you don't like. Hell, you can even put the classic theme on if you like the minimalistic look.

I've done plenty of research and I've used Premium, Basic and Ultimate in retail form as well.
I use my computer for gaming, downloading, multimedia, programming, and scientific softwares.

Please enlighten me some of Home Premiums great features not found in Home Basic.
