How come I have to use Dell's very rare graphic card driver updates instead of the ones from ati.com ?

What video card do you have?

And who said you had to use Dell's drivers?

I have an X1400. When I go to the ATI site it says under supported platforms pretty much every manufacturer besides Dell, and when I download the 'verification' tool, it says that my notebook doesn't have a compatible card or something and I should see my manufacturer for updates.

/edit: Now I just got the most recent x1400 package off Dell and try to install it and it says "Package not supported on this system."

There's sticky in the gaming forums on how to update your drivers with the ATI drivers, even if your card "isn't supported."

I updated my X1400 (on a 6400) direct from ATI without any problems - Catalyst version 7.2, driver 8.342.0.0 under 32-bit Vista. Just went to the ATI site and chose the combination of OS and graphics card - never asked me what machine I was running.
