Does dell have any way of tracing the hard drives on its systems?

For example, if I am to swap my hard drive for one another system (same make and size), is there any way for Dell to know?

Is the service tag/express code saved or imprinted anywhere on the hard drive?

    Thanks.

    Good question...

Although I cannot offer any hard proof, it is said that when the system is being built, each part is separately scanned, the end result being the original configuration listed with dell.com under the service tag.

Whether the scanner picks up any further info is beyond me though

I'm pretty sure they know. We had some drives fail in a RAID array on a Dell server, and we were told that the issue was related to a specific batch of drives produced by the manufacturer of the HDs we had. They seemed to know that we had these particular drives in the server when shipped....

They have the serial numbers of the parts in your machine. They are tied to the service tag. Do they check when the technician comes to your house? Not at all. But they could.

Little green men living inside the m1530 sniff out the information when you're watching YouTube videos...

    Just kidding...
My guess is that they somewhat are tied with the service tag, and somehow, like microsoft, the dell programs send information regarding your computer's status...

cross your fingers so they don't look at your IE's index.dat o_O...
    Thats just my guess though.
