I know that Alienware has the ability for you to buy a new graphic card on your own and plug it in without having to send the whole lap top back. Does Dell offer any features like this? I am looking at buying a Inspiron 9100 and wondered how easy it is to upgrade graphics when they will eventually become outdated.

Well, you can check out my post regarding changing Dell video cards.

The Dell XPS is the only system that Dell has sanctioned upgrades for, meaning they will upgrade (one time) for you.

The only way you could upgrade the 9100 or some of the other Dell systems, is if they add a new video card to that line up. For example, the best card available for the 9100 is the ATI 9700. That's the best card you can upgrade to, unless Dell adds another card down the road which is unlikely at this point. You can't use a card from another system in the 9100 because the form factors are different.

Changing cards in all systems other than the XPS is not supported by Dell and can void your warranty.

Again, please see my post earlier regarding this subject.

    ok thanks!

so should the 9700 be good enough for all the high end games out right now, and hopefully half life 2?

    mind the gap

Thanks for the info Andrew. That's good to know.

As for the ATI 9700, I think it's an amazing little card. New games and future ones will have no problem running on this little gem.
