Does the adapter power the notebook still, but just not the battery too?

No, the battery has to be in the laptop for it to work, any ideas?

When the notebook is on, does it indicate running from A/C or is the battery just continually draining?

it indicates that it's running from the battery, and doesn't work when the battery's removed..

It sounds like the power connector to the motherboard is broken. I have seen this a few times.

Most of the time you can replace the connector or resolder the connection to the motherboard.
