Dang, this may be my next replacement for my XPS 15...

I love the look and extra goodies you get with it. Would be a great choice imo.
-
Also really interested in this laptop, but I can't find anything on this laptop other then the initial announcement. not even a video from Dell.
-
It's on dell canada's website. I think it's 1400 to 2000 cdn.

It's for sale, just no reviews out there. If I hadn't thrown out that 15% coupon I had, I would maybe bite the bullet and review one here.

It will go on discount soon enough. I got 400 dollars off my notebook and 600 dollars off my XPS workstation.
The pre-review. I really like the price to performance of this system.

If I was looking for more desktop'ish system for my notebook I would have bought one. I wish there was a 14 plus with 2 in 1.Last edited: Jun 24, 2021 -
This looks like an incredible 16" laptop with powerful CPUs (and GPU if you need it) at a much lower price than an XPS. The 3072 x 1920 panel is about 220 ppi, which is great and the standard on all Mac displays. I wonder how good that panel is.
Delivery times are 1.5 months in France.Last edited: Jun 24, 2021kojack likes this. -
Just checked on dell canada. Delivery is in 3 weeks here. That was the top spec model with 32gb of ram.

RAM appears to be user upgradeable thankfully. Sadly looks like only 1 m.2 slot though.

Yeah, that's my only complaint with my system too. One slot for drives. But I am ok with that. I have a 4tb ssd in it and for editing I have 2 nvme in the dual usb C enclosure and a 4tb Spinny disk for project storage.

its already up for sale incase anyone was wondering. Just my concern is the power delivery if it will be sufficient or it will have issues similar to xps last year. any thoughts on this ? -
I am using the new 14" 2 in 1 with the core i7 and it flat out flies. I need to upgrade the ram to 64gb but as it sits right now, it's FAST!
-
Thats good to know. is that the i7-1165G7 model?
On the side note, I've just chated dell regarding the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 3060 version. They said it will come with USB C 130W charger. It also has an alternative 4.5mm barrel size Power Jack based on the ports though. No idea if it would be possible to buy higher wattage power brick to solve the power delivery issue though.kojack likes this. -
Hmm, not sure on the charger, I use the included barrel charger with no issue. and yes it's the 1165G7. I love this machine. It's fast, well built and everything I wanted.

I ordered one of the sale 16's with the 3060 but it won't ship until late September so I'm not sure if I'll keep the order or not.
kojack likes this. -
Both my recent orders were like that. I ordered my 5406 which was "ship the next day" on the website, I placed the order and it said not delivered until august 9. I got it 5 days later. I am guessing your computer will arrive much sooner than September. My xps workstation was a similar story.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Sadly when I ordered it said September 21st on the website, my guess is that will be fairly accurate. -
WOW, I just looked. They slipped from the last time I looked. I am thinking this is going to be a popular device. People wait months for rotten fruit devices. We are spoiled where most everything from Dell is a few weeks out at most.
-
I suspect Dell support has no idea about PSU.
Max power delivery through USB-C is 100W, Dell set it to 90W, maybe leave some buffer. 90W PSU is not enough for a 45W CPU + 45W GPU, no need to mention the 60W 3060 Max-Q.
So Dell must ship it with a 150W+ regular PSU. If you use a 90W USB-C PSU, it works, but if you play games, it will drain battery.
I have a 7590 with 1650 GPU paired with TB16 which can supply 90W, battery would drain for sure when I play games. -
This is what shipped with mine. I should have it Wednesday. Looks like USB C in the picture. I assumed it was a barrel plug.

EDIT. i think it's a barrel plug now.Last edited: Jul 12, 2021 -
Did you actually get the laptop? How is it? How about the build quality and screen?
I have 7590 with OLED and love it. I need a new laptop, but 9500/9700 are too expensive. I would like to know how much is the difference between a XPS with 4k OLED and a Inspiron with 3K LCD.Fishpony likes this. -
I am going to go out on a limb and say the XPS will have more vibrant colors. However, that being said, unless you had them side by side, you would not notice.
-

You mean the max delivery through the USB-C standard is 100w, dell has increased the max power delivery via USB-C in their XPS series, they may do so in the Inspiron as well. But even the 120W max would be hard pressed to give the required wattage to the system. -
I should have it by tomorrow. I'm coming from a desktop and before that super cheap laptops so I think i will be happy with it. I will definitely scrutinize it and report back.
-
What about the 180 barrel connector charger on their site? Will that work? Also can I use that charger as well?
-
Just got mine in. Packaging is terrible, huge dent on the side but laptop seems fine. Trackpad is huge doesn't click very well at the top. Keyboard is nice and screen seems great so far.

Well I got my Inspiron 16 Plus with the 3060 yesterday in a box that was beat to hell. Won't have any time to mess with it until maybe Saturday, we shall see how it is.

I take it, it's a shipping provider issue. I would set up a claim even if the computer is fine. That's uncalled for. Everything that ever came from dell to me has been pristine.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Thankfully the laptop is fine, it's odd because every thread I've seen on the laptop talks about their box being crunched, I wonder if something happened to the shipping container from china or something. Running some tests on it, so far I like a lot about it. If the battery life isn't total crap then I may be listing my XPS for sale, lol.pau1ow, kojack and saturnotaku like this. -
I love the color of it. I wish they made a 14 plus in 2 in 1, in that blue color with the 16:10 screen.custom90gt likes this.
-
How is the 16 plus working?
-
No. I mean my XPS draws more than 90W. Since TB/USBC only provides 90W, it draw battery at the same time when I play game.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
The TB port on the XPS can provide 120W, the standard is 100W, but dell upped that. It's a bummer that it's only 120w, but that's better than 100w. I have a USB-C multi-meter I can throw on the 16 plus to see what it will do, but even with my 120W usb-c adapter it goes into low power mode.
So far I haven't had a ton of time with the 16 Plus, I like the screen size and the extra real estate from the 3k screen, but it's pretty lack luster in terms of brightness when compared to the XPS. The build quality is good but not great. I'm still not sure if I will keep it. -
Right on. I think it's the perfect machine for most users looking for a decent powerful notebook without the massive outlay of cash. Of course, they need to cut corners in places to keep them from robbing xps sales. But overall i think they did a great job with the new inspiron. My 14 is very well built. Better than any notebook I had previously throughout the years. I see no difference in it and my sons 2015 macbook air to tell you the truth, both aluminum, both have great keyboards, both have great touchpads, mine pulls ahead with upgradability, 2 in1 form factor, much much faster internals and better software.

Almost an XPS 16: Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7610 laptop in the test notebookcheck.com
Regrettably, things are not looking so good in terms of performance. Both the CPU and the GPU are slower than expected compared to competitors with identical or similar features.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Yeah I'm finding this out myself. I can't get the GPU to run at more than 45W after a few minutes of gaming or transcoding on the GPU. I'm putting together a little benchmark review but after that I think it's going back to Dell. Not a big enough jump up from my current XPS.saturnotaku and Papusan like this. -
Is Dell able to do a great laptop out of the box?
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Inspiron-15-7559-Notebook-Review.154635.0.html
they always seem to do some things great, and other things completely wrong.
For example:
1. Why did they remove page up/down buttons?
2. I don’t understand what people talk about when they are saying spongy touch pad.
3. display response time around 40ms… I checked online that most display are around 4-5ms.
4. Some people say the laptopbecoming got very fast.
I was waiting for this laptop, because of the performance and design, but oh well, I guess I will need to wait the second version…Last edited: Aug 13, 2021 -
What's funny, my 14 2 in 1 does not suffer from any of this.
1. it does have the page up and down buttons.
2. It does not have a spongy trackpad, it's quite surface like now.
3. Not sure but I never see any issue with the response time on my screen
4. I only gets warm when I push it. Not even hot.
If you can deal with the smaller size it's a great machine. -

It's weird that temp wise it's not too bad of a system, but Dell throttles the hell out of it. If you plan on using it for games or content creation, just hope your workload won't take more than 10 minutes otherwise it's going to be throttled...

My main usage would be web browsing, photo/video editing and gaming.
hopefully they can fix some of the problems with hardware update…
Some people are saying the audio isn’t great. What does it mean? I remember when I bought the Inspiron 7559 people were saying the same thing, but for me I find it ok. But who know? -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
If you're planing on playing games, I would look elsewhere. Between the slow response screen and the random drops in GPU wattage, it's not a good choice. In terms of audio, it's ok but the XPS is much better.
-
On the flip side, the XPS is also much more expensive. So there is a give and take.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Can be more expensive. My XPS cost $400 less than the 16, but I bought it from the dell outlet. That's after I used a 10% off and a stackable 15% off on the 16. It's not a cheap laptop by any stretch of the imagination.Papusan likes this. -
How can the XPS be better if it’s thinner and smaller?
On paper, the 16 plus looks good. 32gb ram, RTX 3060, 99% srgb, etc.
But seems you can’t use these features without encountering problems…
I’ve never buy other brands. I never really liked Lenovo laptop, MSI is too much about gaming and another brand I can see having a large potential to what I’m looking for is Gigabyte with Aero laptop, but they don’t seem to have a direct sale and support… Also they put the webcam at the bottom which is a very bad design choice and I hate colorful keyboard.
Dell on the other hand is making good looking laptop, but they always make some weird compromises that don’t make sense. G series look ugly and Alienware too.Last edited: Aug 17, 2021 -

The XPS is better in other ways. For me here are my thoughts:
Pros for the XPS:
Better battery life
Brighter screen
Much better speakers
Better Build quality
You already know the dedicated GPU is nothing wonderful, instead of ordering a 3060 thinking it will perform like a 3060
Better touchpad
Pros for the 16 plus:
The screen size is perfect, not much bigger than the XPS
Better port selection
Better specs on paper
Better cooling, although it doesn't matter if Dell chooses to just gimp the hardware anyway
It's a pick the machine for what you want to do situation. I ordered the 16 plus thinking that it would be a good compromise for an all around system. Sadly limiting the GPU to 40W after minutes of use for no reason is enough to make me send it back. No sense in having a 3060 that performs worse than a 3050.saturnotaku likes this. -
Ok thank you. I see that in the review they are using the RTX 3050 version which only have 2 fans compared to 3 with the 60W RTX 3060. Do you think that could make a difference in performance or heating?
Also for the response time, I guess it something that could be replaced if there are more compatible 16" display on the market. -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
Well my 3060 runs at 40W most of the time, so I would so no it won't make a huge difference. The cooling is pretty good on it, but the limiting to 40W is stupid in my opinion.
I would venture to say a replacement 16" screen would be a pipe dream, and would probably be hundreds of dollars. -
How much slower is it doing a task compared to your xps?
