It's not slower than the XPS, it's often faster. It's just not as fast as it should be for the hardware.

IE benchmarking then. If it's faster than the XPS it's plenty fast. Real world results speak for themselves. If this machine is faster than an XPS, Stop reading so much into silly numbers.

We've been down this road. It's not benching that it's slower than it should be on, in fact it benchmarks "ok" because that's not as stressful as real world use. It's slower in gaming and using the GPU for decoding and running finite element analysis on. Sure it's slightly faster than the xps, but it should be 3x, not 1.25x... I'm not putting up with paying full price for half of the expected performance. I was ok with a gimped 65w 3060, but not a severely gimped 40w 3060.

I've searched and searched but can't find what the oem 1tb drive is in the 7610 model. The main info I'm looking for is if the 1tb drive is in the form factor of 2230 or 2280. It seems no reviewers have had a 1tb 7610. Thanks in advance. Travis

The brand will likely change because Dell likes to throw whatever they want into it. Mine had a Samsung PM9A1 2280 1TB drive in it. The other slot is a 2230 so basically worthless to me.

Why would an extra SSD slot be useless? I think that's a great option to have.

Do you know of any 2230 M.2 SSDs with 1TB or so of space? They could have easily fit a 2280 slot there but didn't. Another win of the XPS over it.

KIOXIA has a 2230 SSD with 1TB of storage.

WD makes one as that’s what comes with Asus Flow X13, which only has a 2230 slot.

So we can spend more money to get a slower SSD (overall theme with this laptop). Still not a "win" in my book. I'm not spending money on a drive that I can only use in one particular laptop when I replace my laptop every few months.

Exactly. Limited ssd options due the form factor, max out at 1TB, slower and more expensive. Worst from all worlds.

I ordered the 3060 rtx, 16GB& 1 TB spec for $1349.00. ($300 off), that is huge bang for your bucks. Here's the link ( https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/del...-7610-laptop/mktnn7610evvks?ref=frommyaccount)

Anyways, I did not find any information on what form factor the 2nd SSD slot was, turns out it was the 2230 shorter SSD form factor. I had already previously ordered a 1TB crucial P5 Plus for about $120 labor day sale, and two 32GB Samsung 3200mhz rams. There are other 3200 mhz rams that require higher voltage (XMP profile) in order to get those speeds, but the samsung was a good price to get the speeds without the need for bios XMP profile. So now my system has 64gigs. The $300 savings I saved was spent on the additional 1TB and 64GB ram and sold the 16GB factory (SK hynix) ram for $51 on eBay.

Now.. about the 1TB 2280 and how I got it in this laptop on the 2nd slot? I put the 2280 into the 2230 slot. You can't fully seat it and screw it down, since the wireless module gets in the way. However, you can still seat it and tilt it down 90% of the way, it just goes over the wifi module. I just taped it down to hold it in place. There is enough clearance between the bottom panel cover and the SSD to not cause any issues. Anyways, I booted it up and drive was recognized and everything works as usual. Benched marked the drive and it was running faster than the factory 1TB. It works.
So for less than $1600 out the door, I have a 3060 rtx, 64gb, 2TB, i7 11800H laptop with a great display. You can't beat that price with those specs from the XPS lineup with hundreds of dollars saved.

Yeah as long as you don't need a full power 3060 or game (the screen is by far the slowest response I've had in a laptop, and the throttling to 40w after minutes of gaming is unacceptable), it really is a great laptop for productivity. Shame you had to jerry rig the second SSD, glad it works. You can even connect it to the bottom of the case with the SSD with thermal pad to help secure it as well. Glad you're enjoying it.

I’m still unsure about buying this laptop. Reading lot of stuffs on internet and I’m also tired of waiting to buy a new laptop when every year, there is something better and worst at the same time.

Currently having an Inspiron 7559, here are my concerns right now:

    1. Audio: Dell advertise as having good audio, but having speakers facing down internally and not having subwoofer… Without being able to test it myself, how does it sound like?

    2. Performance : online reviews are only writing about the 3050 version and they are still getting good performance over 30fps at ultra on lot of games. The 3060 version has better cooling and one more fan. How is it? I’m mostly looking to play Flight Simulator at high in 1080p. Not looking at 60fps. 30 is enough for me.

    3. display response time : some say it’s bad, others say no… I guess it’s a personal opinion.

    4. dell doesn’t sell the 32gb ram version anymore :(

Yep, didn't like that I had to jerry rig the 2280 in there. I didn't think about it, but that is a good idea with the thermal pad the case. I have not noticed throttling of the 3060 yet, although I do not do any heavy gaming (that's what I have a desktop for) and did not buy this laptop for that purpose. It isn't meant to be a gaming laptop. Light gaming is fine, I believe. I've tried some old Steam games, ran perfectly fine and the response time is on par with most cheap 60hz desktop monitors. Other than the response time, the screen is only 300 nits bright, which can be an issue outdoors. For indoors, its more than adequate. Pixel density is on par with "retina" displays. My main use for the laptop was for production, video editing via Premiere Pro, photoshop/lightroom for photography edits etc. It's perfect for content creation. I like the non-glossy screen and the colors are accurate.

I have Flight Simulator 2020 and will download it just to test the capabilities. Speaker performance I would say is decent. It isn't going to be the best, but it's not bad. I didn't expect much from laptop speakers and therefore it was better than I thought.
I also recommend not going with dell RAM, it's a rip off. Although now I do see the option to add 32GB but you're looking at $1800 with that configuration. Buy the ram yourself and upgrade it, that's one benefit of going with Dell laptops, upgradeability is usually a breeze. I added an additional 1TB and 64GB ram that costed me less than $300..it would've been over $500 with Dell? 64gbs, is a bit overkill for me, but I do use a huge chunk of it with video editing.

I wouldn't recommend the laptop if you plan to play demanding games with max settings and want 60+fps. This isn't going to cut it and you'll be disappointed. It is a well balanced laptop that is capable of playing games with moderate settings and at the same time can do decent content creation (the extra screen real estate is very helpful with spreadsheets, photoshop, word docs, etc etc.). The specs, build quality, ports, for this price range, is a great deal compared to the competition.

I just ordered a thinkbook 16P for $1100 with a 3 year warranty to give it a shot. The response times on the screen are better and it's more color accurate/brighter. We will see if it'll replace the XPS 9500 that's built so well. Stupid that one of the ram slots is soldered though...

    Specs:
    • 16" 2560x1600 400 nits 100% sRGB Dolby Vision HDR IPS display
    • AMD Ryzen 5 5600H Hexa-Core / 12 Thread 3.3 GHz base / 4.2 GHz turbo Processor
    • 16GB (8GB soldered + 8GB SODIMM) 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM (max. 48GB supported)
    • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive + empty M.2 slot
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6 Graphics Card (Max Q)
    • Stereo Speakers (2x 2W Harman)
    • 720p HD + IR Webcam w/ Privacy Shutter
    • Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader
    • 802.11ax WiFi 6 (2x2), Bluetooth 5.2
    • Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit
    • 71 WHr Battery
    • Weight: 4.39 lbs.

Bummer they would solder one of the ram slots...
I like the pre-calibrated screen from that, but dislike the pixel density at 188ppi.

I actually prefer it since windows scaling issues won't be a problem. I've had too many issues on my 4k laptops and a couple with the 16 plus, so I'm over it.

I just tested Flight Simulator 2020 at high settings on native 3072x1920 resolution and was running consistently 35+ fps. I believe average is around 39, just flying into Sacramento International Airport. I did not notice any throttling or performance decrease throughout the test. The fans seem to be running high the whole time though (although I also set Dell thermal settings to Ultra performance). If you run 1080p, I'm sure you can get better results and also with higher settings. Game looks great though!

Thanks a lot! Yeah, my current laptop too have fans running crazy when gaming, but I guess it’s the same for every laptops. I didn’t want a gaming laptop, because I’m mostly gaming on console and I’m more casual on pc gaming. Also wanted something that looked clean and professional.

Will probably buy it by next week.

Is 20% off good or should I wait Black Friday deal?

20% is likely good (although their base price fluctuates), it may be cheaper on black Friday, but sometimes their selection is only limited to certain configurations. If you need it now, I'd pick it up.

I can say that this laptop with the 3060 RTX, dell thermal set to performance, plays at a solid 30-35fps on New World on High settings, full screen native resolution.
On dell thermals setting on quiet, still a decent 25-30fps very playable.

After lot of thinking, I decided to wait the 2022 version next summer. Why?

    1. Audio. I listen to lot of music when working on my laptop, so not having subwoofer and having speaker under the laptop seems to not make a great audio. I know I could use headphone, but I'm normally only using that for my phone.

    2. Seems like lot of people have issues with trackpad and keyboard. I'm not using my trackpad, because I have a mouse, but I'm trying to understand keyboard problem.

    3. Some thermal issues reported when browsing or when the laptop is put on sleep.

So maybe the 2022 version will have a better finish?

Doubt they will change anything with the finish for the next model, and the speakers will likely be the same. If you want good sound then you should get an XPS. I didn't have any keyboard or trackpad issues with it.
