I've got a Dell Insipron E1705, and about 2 days ago my Battery would charge fine with the AC Adapter plugged in.
I ran it without the Adapter plugged in yesterday, the battery got down to about 34%, and I shut it down. I got home and plugged in the AC Adapter to charge it, and it would say "Plugged in, Charging" but the battery has stayed at 34%. I shut my laptop down, and let the Battery charge while it was off. Today I turn my laptop on, and it is still at 34%, saying "Plugged in, charging." The Battery sign with the lightning bolt through it turns off for several minutes, then comes on for about a minute or so, and turns off again for several minutes, repeating that process.
Any idea as to why this is happening?
Edit: I'm running on Vista home premium.

Take out the battery and try running the system for a bit.
If the system turns off, you have either a broken power jack or a bad AC adapter. -
I took out the Battery, and im running on just the AC Adapter at this moment.
I shut down the laptop, took the battery out and turned the laptop on. -
Take the battery pack and AC power out
Hold the power button for 30 seconds
Try recharging it again.
This happens to HP notebooks often. -
I shut down the laptop, took the battery out and then the Adapter, held the power button for 30 seconds, put back battery, plugged in adapter and it's still doing the same thing. "Plugged in, charging" But no animation of the charge happening, and the percentile is not moving up or down but at a constant 34%.
The lightning bolt battery icon at the bottom is off, and only turning on every few minutes for a few seconds. -
I just took the AC Adapter out and let my battery Discharge to 30%, plugged it back in and it charged from 30-34%

You've not had any issues? Run it for a while, you only ran it for 9 minutes (at most) before posting back. Give it some time, if you still have no issues, the problem is either with your battery or your motherboard. I suggest running the battery calibration tool in the BIOS.
-
I had it unplugged for about half an hour.
How do I access the battery calibration tool, or BIOS in general?
I unplugged the AC Adapter and let my battery discharge to 30%, and when I plugged the adapter back in, the battery started charging to 35% and stopped. -
Turn off the computer. Once off, hit the power button, then hit F2 rapidly while the white bar is loading along the bottom, on the "Dell" screen. The tool should be in there.

I didn't see a Battery calibration tool in the BIOS. it showed me the battery health and said the battery was charging normally.
Also, I discharged my battery to the point where my screen went black and the power button light was flashing on and off before i put the Adapter back in, it went from 0%-20% and has stopped charging. But, the Battery icon with the lightning bolt is On constantly now, hasn't shut off yet. -
Bump for great justice.

Bad battery or motherboard.
Have any friends with a laptop that uses the same battery? (Inspiron 6400/1505/9200/9300/1705/XPS2 maybe others as well)?
The batteries for laptops are intelligent so there is a problem with them communicating somewhere.
My guess is bad battery though. -
If your Battery is over 12 months old I would say the Battery is bad...
I have seen many laptops that do the same thing as yours with a bad motherboard.
See if the light is on on the charger and if it is Try a differant outlet or charger if you have access to one.
After that if your problem is still there I would say your motherboard is bad. -
If it is the motherboard, you are pretty much just going to need a new laptop? Have you been having any other problems with the computer itself? If it is just the battery, you can find them on eBay or Amazon considerably less than what you would get them from Dell for. I think they may be on back order right now anyway. Try Denaq laptop batteries if Dell doesn't have them. They always have them in stock. Again though, if it's not the motherboard. Good luck!

almost got the e1705 a few years ago...

My battery won't work either and it is brand new. My Bios is A 01 and the Ebay guy I bought it from said to upgrade my Bios to the newest number to make the battery work.
I posted another question as to whether the upgrade would really work or not.
My e1705 is only a few yrs old too and wasn't used that much when my mother had it. I have it now and want a workable battery.
