I'm a brand new owner of this Dell machine and I just downloaded "Dell Inspiron ... N5050 Owner's Manual". However, it appears oriented to removing and installing components.

I also downloaded the complete specifications PDF, also from Dell.

Specifically, I'd like to disable the touch pad in lieu of my wireless mouse. As on my old Toshiba, my hands seem to be always touching that thing -- so it is not needed. In general, I'd like a manual for future similar questions.

Is there a volume adjuster for the speaker(s)?

Is there some trick to making the sleep option work? This machine is Win 7 / 64 while my desktop is Win 7 / 32. That one works but the laptop stays on constantly. In order to put it to sleep I must hit the Start, etc.

I'd also like to see documentation on what those yellow symbols on the function keys that go with the Fn special key. They sure are purty.

When your mouse is plugged in, it should disable the touchpad automatically. If not, hit Fn + F3 to disable the touchpad.

    Volume up: Fn + F11
    Volume down: Fn + F12
Mute: Fn + unlabeled button between F12 and Insert

Y'all talking about sleep or hibernate? If you want the notebook to sleep, just close the lid. Your default power plans will put your system to sleep if you close the lid, provided you have not changed those settings in the power options control panel. If its hibernate, then yes, I believe you have to hit 'Start' then hibernate in order to put it into that mode.

    Hi,

You may also disable the Touchpad from the Alps Touchpad settings. Please follow the below mentioned steps.

    • Click on Start, select Control Panel.
    • Select Mouse Properties.
    • Click on the Dell Touchpad Tab and click on “Click to change Dell Touchpad settings”.
    • Click on the Device Select tab.
    • Locate the option ‘Disable Touchpad/ Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present’, click inside the box to enable this function.
    • Click on Apply and OK.
    • Connect and external mouse and check the same.

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks and regards
