I know it's an old laptop but up until last week has worked without fail.

    Inspiron 1720
    intel T7300
    geforce 8400
    4gb ram
    750 momentus xt hybrid

shut down normally last thursday, when i tried to boot it up friday morning; power light came on bluetooth flashed hdd light up briefly (i can hear the hdd spinning) then nothing. Blank screen, no flashing lights, power light stays on but nothing else. No boot screen, can't get to bios, the screen is completely black.

unplugged power, pulled battery, unplugged cmos battery, let sit overnight. held fn + power button 30 seconds, plugged power back in still the same; acts as if booting then nothing. pulled fan tested with 9volt ran fine, reseated mem, replaced motherboard, swapped hdd ( xt accessable in 2nd drive of hp laptop) still same results. battery is new 100% charged, power supply lights green stays green when plugged into laptop. Tried external monitor same results.

Have checked and recheck similar posts. Please any helpful imput would be appreciated, I do have a cpu coming and a new graphic card.

    Hi,

This could either be because of the LCD or a NO POST (Power on Self-Test) situation. To isolate the issue you may try the following steps.

    • Please make sure the AC power is connected.
    • After you turn on the system please press the ‘Caps lock’ & ‘Num Lock’ keys and check if the light indication appears for the respective functions.
    • If you get the light indications for the above mentioned keys, proceed with the steps mentioned below.
    • Press and hold the ‘Fn’ key and turn on the system (PSA – Diagnostics) and wait till you get 2 beeps. Once you hear 2 beeps and see no display on the screen, please press the key ‘N’ and check if there is any display on the Screen.
    • If the screen is fine, it will display some color bars during this process.
    • When you have the external monitor connected and once you hear the Hard Drive spinning sound, please press Fn + F8 to check if you get the display on the external monitor. If you don’t see any response on the monitor in the first attempt, please try the Fn + F8 again two or three times to check if the display switches back to the external monitor.
    • If the issue is only with the LCD, there will be a display on the external monitor.

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks & Regards

ok got the new graphic card and t9500 cpu............
with the new motherboard, graphic card and original t7500 cpu system booted up everything running smoothly again. Must have been the graphic card.
Tried to use the t9500 and system won't boot. Checked the bios it's A09 should work. I'm updating all the drivers and will reflash the bios then try the t9500 again.
