Hello guys
I have a couple of questions. I would like to buy a Dell Latitude D630 for a relative living in South America. The Complete Care and 3 year NBD onsite warranty comes standard if I buy it through my school premier site.
I have read that a 3 year NBD onsite warranty can be transferred to another country. Is that correct? Also, I'm aware that Complete Care cannot be transfered, and that's fine with me because they won't need it anyway...
Now comes the big question. I could bring a laptop and pass through customs without any problems when I visit them this summer because it's considered a personal item. If I bring it sealed in box, I would then have to pay 30% tax custom clearance fee plus other fees. I won't be doing that for sure![]()
When you transfer the ownership, does Dell ask you for any custom clearance forms or receipts that you have paid duties there? Or I just go ahead and do the international transfer ownership and that's all they ask.
Thanks in advanced!

Hey, I recently bought a dell xps m1330, and send it to a friend that lives in NY.
I live in Israel so I’m gonna take to computer from NY to Israel, I’ve already send dell an email that request to transfer the ownership.
I got an email from them that the transfer can be done only 6 months after the purchase, why, who and what? I don’t know...
but I hope I won’t have any problems with the laptop for the first 6 months, an if I do hopefully the company that gives lab services in Israel will get my computer with no problem because I have the 3 year NBD onsite warranty. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
You can write to tech support, most of times they would allow it.
-
The only WARRANTY that can be transferred internationally is 3Yr NBD and not with Complete Care.
You can transfer ownership internationally at any time, however, this is a separate issue than warranty coverage.
I have communicated with several who were under the impression that a transfer of ownership to another country goes along side the warranty plan. It does not. -
Les, so only the owner can have his/her original warranty transferred? No one else can use it? I'm a little confused...
-
RAMBO29, are you sure? that if I’ll talk to tech support they will transfer my ownership with no problem?
I don’t get why when I’ve send dell the email, requesting to transfer the ownership they said I cant do so, only 6 months after the purchase.
and about the warranty, in Israel they make such a mess if you don’t buy the laptop in Israel... so I want to be covered from all side if a problem will accrue, and i will need lab support.
And yes only the owner can transfer, you need to fill up a form (can be downloaded from the Dell website) and than send it by email, or you can fill it up on the website it self (it depends on what country your transferring the laptop...)
here's the website:

Thanks for the clarification guys. I was under the impression that you could internationally transfer the ownership along with the warranty... I was wrong
-
The 6 month policy may be correct. Dell is very proatcive against people buying in one country because its a better deal and then transferring to the next. This is the case with Canada/US as I had previously learned once upone a time with my 700m (still one of the best laptops i ever had).
And yes only the owner can have his warranty transferred of course.... If I become the new owner and you did a system/warranty transfer, I could transfer if sold again...just not out of the country unless its a 3yrNBD warranty. -
1. Would my complete care be out if I take my system out of the country I bought it in (US) and go to live in another?
2. How does this work? In the sense, who determines if the complete care or the NBD would be applied when I report a problem? AFAIK, Complete care is replacing the parts and NBD is repairing the parts. Am I right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
You may not be able to transfer at all because the complete care is part of the warranty coverage. The site and warranty coniditons state that only the 3Yr NBD warranty can be transferred to another country.
-
Well, What If I didn't know that I wouldn't be moving out of the country? So, is all the money that I paid for the warranty useless?
And I'm not wanting to sell the laptop and transferring the ownership to anyone for that matter. Just taking the laptop along when I'm going to another country.. Do I still have to go through the same transfer process in this case too? -
Sellin the laptop was exacctly why this whole process came to be. Too many people were buying a cheaper system from Dell in one country and then shipping it to the next. It was unfair for Dell of that country. It is presently and export violation to do that now and Dell is very strict in scrutinizing any such transfers to a new country.
They have only left the 3YrNBD loophole (not to included complete care last I had heard and it appears they now have a caveat that this can only be done after 6 months purchase.
If you are visiting a country and your system breaks, this is a different situation and, under special circumstances, it may be repaired there.
Heads up though, my old 700m had to be repaired and I had to send it to an out of country friend who lived in the US who, was fortunately, my original shipper, when I purchased the system off ebay. This was a long time ago.
Its the same with many companies. I had a Sony which needed a repair, again a Ebay purchase, and they told me I could drop it off at Circuit City across the border which is where I would pick it up when repaired. -
I'm having the same problem..
I buy my xps on NY and bring back to Brazil. I can only transfer the ownership within 6 months. -
Les - Thanks for the clarification.
NBD and Complete Care differ only in the accidental insurance clause right? I mean even if something happens to my notebook I can ask them to fix it under NBD but cant claim insurance / replacement under complete care.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. -

Good thread, btw. -
Thats a great reference and is valid if you are travelling abroad and using your system when something occurs.
The key word is visiting, not transferring here. Dell scrutinizes buying a system in one country and then transferring ownership to another simply to get it cheaper elsewhere. I will suggest the owner of this thread is the exact circumstance they discourage as he/she mentions that they would not bring it to their company unopened as it would incur a 30% tax.
There is never a problem getting warranty coverage through valid travel, its the trickery used to purchase from Dell cheaper in a country other than ones own theyfrown upon. -
that’s not accurate, cause I talked to a lab in Israel that gives lab services to dell laptops, and I asked them if I’ll buy a laptop in the U.S and I will have an NBD 3 YEARS WARRENTY will they accept the warranty and fix my laptop (labor+parts) without paying?
they said, that NBD warranty is the only warranty they accept and it’s an international warranty, And I won’t have to pay for the labor+parts. -
Again you are mixing up warranty service and ownership transfer.
Dell, worldwide, will repair any system in ANY country under warranty if a person is there for a legitimate reason and NOT trying to skirt the system.
The NBD ONLY concerns someone who wants to buy a system in one country and then transfer their ownership/warranty to another residence in another country. This is where we found out there is still a 6 months period where the ownership can be transferred.
Its actually a very simple process if you understand the difference between ownership/warranty transfer and warranty service while abroad.
So...it is accurate...and documented by Dell. -
There are no special circumstances and your system WILL be repaired internationally under the 3 Year NBD warranty if it breaks. -
