So, according to Canalys, despite the PC category growing by over 10%, Dell has just lost 10% of it's market share in devices sold over the last year, based upon stats between Q2, 2011 and Q2, 2012.
Also see: Canalys: PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line -- Engadget
See: 2012 will bring new world record in PC shipments | Canalys
In Q2, 2011, Dell shipped a total of 10,800,000 PCs.
In Q2, 2012, Dell shipped only 9,600,000 PCs.
In a growing market, thats a exceeds a 10% loss from 11.1% of the market to 8.9% of the market.
IMO this is related at least in part to the many issues highly frustrated and disappointed Dell customers express on these forums.
Why do you think this is?
-
I think your right about the reason for this decline, Dell just sucks at customer support and service and people know that.
-
Their consumer line stink at cost/performance ratio, non-NBR do not care about speaker/screen when buying computer. Power and look is what counts. The general public don't know what is a alienware, but the XPS cant game.
But who know about their profit margins. -

The answer is simple. Most of the growth was driven by tablets, and Dell doesn't have a strong presence in the tablets market. The non-tablet PC category actually fell by a few percent.
-
Actually Dell customer support/service is very good, but the product SUCKS!

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
The market is changing, but there is no money in hardware, as IBM found out 7 years ago and dropped out of the consumer PC business. All companies outsource their computers, so it is the drab world of selling low profit computers and lots of them to make any kind of profit. This happened just a few years ago to Acer, who were selling tons and tons of netbooks. Once tablets exploded, Acer lost alot in PC sales.
Oh and by the way, I've been buying Dell personally since 2005, and my parents since 1997, never had one fail under warranty, and none really just dying themselves (2 killed in lightning storm). -
Dell needs to create a tablet with Apple like quality if they want to continue to grow. And I agree the xps line is pretty weak.

A few days ago, a friend who was a former employee of Dell explained to me that one of the reasons why there are some many technical issues is that Dell will vary it's components for any given machine according to the lowest market cost at the time. I guess thats why my XPS L702x is so bad and why Dell's quality control is so poor, especially recently. It used to be that Dell quickly fixed issues that occured. Now they just waste huge amounts of time after making mistakes.
For example, high latency issues:mean that YouTube videos / Audio just stutters every 30 to 45 seconds as it plays.
This happened when the machine was shipped from the factory. This continues to happen after the machine was rebuilt and the OS has been re-installed and drivers re-installed by Dell. Who would want a computer that can't play YouTube videos satisfactorily?
Dell say they care, but anyone who cared wouldn't ship a computer that can't play mp3s or YouTube videos without stuttering.
BTW, during this same time frame Lenevo gained huge market share despite being Laptop and PC centric.
According to a recent Neilson study, people are much more likely to trust their peers and also independent other users online than adverts. But recently Dell's quality control is so poor, they don't even check their adverts to see if they display correctly:
I wonder if Michael Dell knows this? -
Nah, Dell customer service has actually always been suspect. They pioneered the whole crappy indian call center thing 10+ years ago.
The drop is mostly due to the increase in competition from tablets and Dell's inability to counter it with their own. -
Here are some more stats, this time excluding tablets and for Western Europe.
Again, this shows Dell has lost over 13% of it's marketshare, while other companies like Lenevo, Acer and especially Asus have gained a lot. The whole category has shrunk by 2.4% as it doesn't include tablets, so Dell has lost over 10% market share here too.

I've heard many a time that Dell isn't really "in" the consumer pc game anymore. They're reportedly there as a way to generate a bit of additional income while pivoting to focus even harder on enterprise. Margins on consumer PC's are super slim so I could see their point.
I will say that their latest Inspiron systems are very nice indeed. It was a smart move to make Inspiron the "mainstream" system line again after relegating it to bargain basement purgatory a few years back. -
I have the following hardware
Vostro 1400 (2007) Fixed 6 months after bought
Studio 1558 (2010) fixed one week after bought
Vostro 1440 (2012) no repairs
Vostro 3450 (2012) no repairs -
because dell is an american company. but more and more american are choosing apple macbook now, especially more new college students pick apple.
Their AW is a completely fail line, dell just doesnt understand the majority popluation want a power house like mbpr, slim, light weight and fast.
dell is losing more share next year, because they make a new xps line which is not able to do anything beside what a 600 hp envy 4 can do. They make these fail notebooks because they dont want to complete their AW linei think this is very funny statement, dell marketing team is living at their dream world. no comptition. just dell alone
Next year, dell is going to lose 14% share -
-
-
They also don't have good prebuilt models to suit many people. Configuring needs more time and money. -
Intel stated it would lose a Billion in sales next year because of a consumer shift to the tablet market...So I guess people are buying more tablets. This is why Dell is releasing the XPS 10 Windows 8 hybrid and XPS Duo 12
-
Just for a bit of perspective...I work at a large company that has had both HP and Dell as suppliers over the past few years. I talk to field techs on an almost daily basis. Almost to a man, they prefer the Dell business machines to the HPs, in particular the laptops. They report fewer technical problems and that they are easier to work on than the HPs. Because of their constant derision, I avoid HP laptops at all costs. Isolated to just my company? Maybe, but I doubt it.
-
I had no problems with custommer support, even helped me when I was outside the warrenty period.
Dell used to be for the lower/middle men but nowadays you have to bring a big bag of money to get a decent system, well at least here in Europe. -
-
no doubt dell is very most popular company but dell only at customer support and service and people know very well their is very issues are like high latency, audio and video both are issue it have .. after two year it his many problems related his speaker are mostly come to in-front of us.................
-
I see two areas where Dell is making mistakes:
1: The current mainstream latitude's are styled like dinosaurs. You make a tired looking office laptop with a grainy screen and huge bezel (E6420/30) and then expect someone to go home and order from your personal line?
2: Ripoff pricing on SSD's from laptops to servers. +$400 for a 256GB SSD Yeah how about NO... -
Instead of releasing more products, DELL should focus on releasing constant driver updates.
I am never buying DELL again. -
Just bought a kick digital storm hailstorm gaming rig. Bye bye dell
Never again due to xps 15 wifi issue -
I like to have "choice", so no more Apple products for me. Dell is OK with me. They are not great, but they don't suck to me. It was a nightmare selling an iMac last year. The software that comes with the machine when you buy it (Ex: iLife) should stay with the machine and not be tied to my iTunes account because they do not want to ship systems with the discs anymore and forced me to download it in the App store.
Dell just lost over 10% market share in the last year!!!
