i very much doubt it. Adamo is competition for thinnest laptop; that is no where near Macbook Air thin.
and as for price, i expect it to be less than Macbook Air cost. around $1400 to 1500. no way will it cost $3000.
-
I almost forgot about that prototype. It would be awesome if that was the Adamo; it must be realistic because that could be very thin. It would be hard to include the optical drive though. It that was the Adamo I would seriously have to consider buying it.
-
I just saw this on Engadget just now.
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/12/26/dell.adamo.blu.ray.leak/
Cliff notes: Blu-ray external, display port, and starting at $1500. First announcement will come at CES with February ship. -
Yeah, most of that was listed in Engadget comments before
The Blu-ray drive has not been listed as internal or external. That's just speculation.
-
It shouldn't have an internal drive if it is aiming to compete with the Macbook Air. They think it might include an external DVD-burner standard with the notebook.
-
Why is that? If they can fit one in, wouldn't that be an added benefit?
-
Why? Well if they can fit one in there then all the power to them, but the technology isn't there right now.
-
An external Blu-Ray drive is worthless as no one who owns a mini notebook will carry around an external drive and there's no point in spending that much money on something you'll never use.
No, my money (and if it is indeed as small as they're claiming, I intend to buy one of these to replace my E4200 which I hate more and more every day) says that it will either be internal with a BR option or will use the same external DVD burner that came with my E4200. Internal drives waste a lot of space though and will add weight to a product that can't afford it, not if it's trying to compete with the Air. -
How is it 'worthless'? Do you have to carry the drive where ever you go?
-
I disagree. The technology is definitely there right now.
-
I guess we will see for sure during CES. However, after seeing the Macbook Air a few times I just don't see it possible to stick an optical drive in there.
-
The Air looks even thinner than it actually is because of it's design -- the edges taper in instead of being a box, a la the Voodoo Envy. I think it's definitely possible to get a CD/DVD drive in there. I don't know how thin a Blu-ray drive is capable of going, but a disc drive of some sort is possible I know.
-
I googled that model number (of the drive) and it said it's interface was Serial ATA. Internal drive then?
-
Think so? I feel that design is somewhat, hmm,
uninspiring. A square box with sharp corners to bruise your wrists on while typing; definitely not a MacBook Air competitor in the aesthetics department. Oh well, it's a Dell... -
My point was that people won't carry it ANYWHERE. You don't buy a 12-13" notebook that is 0.75" thick so you can carry around external accessories. I've used the drive that came with my E4200 exactly once, and that was only to make sure that it actually worked.
A BD-ROM drive is only going to be used for watching movies since there's no other software available. I'm not going to carry a drive around to do that which means that the only place it MIGHT get used would be at home, and if I'm going to watch a movie here, I might as well toss it in a standalone player. -
That's the whole point of an external drive. Why carry around the extra weight all the time when it is seldom used? You DON'T have to buy it, it is an OPTION you buy should you ever want to use Blu-Ray.

Very interesting - especially since this was first posted on Edgadget almost a year ago....

The fact is that Dell itself has said that the Adamo will be the thinnest notebook on earth so it has to be at least as thin as the MacBook Air.
If you look carefully at this leaked photo, this prototype is thin but it doesn't seem to come close to the Apple competitor.
Let's wait and see.
-
Yeah, it's defiantly not thinner than the Macbook Air, but being over a year old they could have made some major changes. You must admit the aluminum covering would give it a Macbook Air like look. But chances are they aren't related, that's at lest a 15 inch notebook pictured, not 13 inch.
-
I agree with you.
I think that the final design of the Adamo will be very different from this photo.
It is a nice design thought, definitely similar to the MacBook Pro.I can't wait!
