Hi, i am about to purchase a vostro 1500 and I just had a couple of questions.
My original specs were the 2.2 ghx (7500) and the 8400 nvidia.
I then had an afterthought of getting the less expensive (80$) 7250 and isntead getting the better graphics card (8600).
What do you think?

Get the better graphics. It will be more futureproof for one, and 2 vs 2.2 ghz makes little difference. From what I have read, there isn't much of a performance difference between the 2mb cache and 4mb either, just a minor one.

do it.
The graphics card is more likely to be a bottleneck than the processor. So by getting the best graphics card you are raising the abilities of the computer (as far as gaming/graphics intensive programs go). Even with the 8600, the video card is still the weakpoint. -

If you plan on some casual gaming, go for 7250+8600. If you'll use just about any other use, go for the 7500+8400.

Performance dif. between 8400 and 8600 is ~250%! THE performance dif. between 7250 and 7500 is about 15% and it's more than 15% better than what the vast majority of people need. the 7250 8600 combo is DEFINITeLY the better bet.
Only caveat is that the 8600 will probly eat your battery life by ~10%(this is a guess, I don't have numbers to back it up) which is the only valid reason for going with the 8400 (in my opinion anyway). -
hey thanks for all the quick replies. I think i am definitely going with the 7250,8600 combo... however, another question popped into my head...
should i get the xga, xga+ or sxga flat panel?
the xga is only 1280x800, the + is 1440x900 and the sx is 1680x1080..
seeing as how i am getting a better grpahics card, does it make sense to run it at a bad resoultion for widescreen? -
i would advise you to stick with the xga+ coz there are many people complaining on the forums, about their 1680x1080 displays

Stop and take a look at this link before jumping in.....

If you see this bechmark T5450 (1.66 GHz) and T7250 (2.0GHz) are having similar performance while T7500 (2.2 GHz)has a better rating compared to T7250.
Is it that the additional 2 MB L2 cache is doing something special?
I was in doubt, but the below 3DMarks2006 benchmark seems to take this feeling a bit more closer...

I am still looking into more info to confirm these. I myself is planning to get a 1530 but was confused on which processor to go for. I am in India and here Dell is charging more that 100$ for T7250 compared to T5450
