The replacement video card was not in stock. They could not tell me what system/configuration I'd get. The Inspiron line has changed since I got my E1705. (see sig for current system) I dont want the studio 17 inch as the best graphics card is well below mine in performance. Do you think I can get them to send a low end XPS m1730? That is the closest thing to my E1705 I think. Or should i wait for the graphics card replacement? I got the BSOD 4 times tonight. Memory parity error. Screen went blank after rebooting but after awhile i got the normal screen. This has been happening for weeks now.

Four times, same problem? I'd trade in for a new machine if I were you.

If Dell does not send you something similar, you can always point that out. You'll either get a better system still, or you can get a full refund for the E1705.

Really a full refund? That would be great! The tech said that they wouldnt be able to determine what system I'd be getting or the components until they started to build it. I will call them tomorrow but not sure what I should say. I can request a low end XPS M1730 but whether I get it and I doubt I will, is another thing.

I remember someone here got an m1730 as a replacement for this E1705 and it came with the 8800M GTX! Dell always promises that a replacement system would be equal or better and since there is no equal, the only better is the m1730! :D

If you don't get a xps 1730 equal to what you paid, ask for a refund.

I got a M1730 as a replacement for my E1705. They also ran out of the video card for me, so I got a system replacement.

Just got off the phone with Dell, Now they say they don't know if they can replace my system because my laptop/video card was not one of those identified as having the nvidia issue. He also said what could happen is they might have me send my laptop to a service center which made me LIVID because I have the best warranty I could grt at the time.. In home service and accidental coverage etc. Now I am stuck waiting for the tech to see what Dell decides. Not looking good at this point. I told them that the card that would be best is the 8800 with the m1730. They said if I did get a replacement system it would be a refurbished one. Is that normal?

Just curious do they give you a new warranty if they replace the system or do you just keep the remainder of your current warranty?

Unless you buy a warranty extension, the replacement system will retain your original warranty.

I'm on day 32. Still nothing but empty promises. They shipped one M1730 then, recalled it as it was being delivered. Then issued two more only to cancel them later. Supposed to be shipping another any day. We'll see.

I refused shipment of their replacement xps m1730 because of the graphics card they put in. An Nvidia 8700 with 256MB of memory and the agea physx accelerator. I just wanted the 8700 with 512MB of memory and no accelerator card. Is that logical?
The dell rep said he has no control over it. I dont want the accelerator card. No resolution at this point. :(

What's wrong with the PhysX accelerator card? You can always remove it yourself, you know.

Hate to sound negative, but the 1730 is a trillion times better than that E1705.

But, whatever, it's your laptop so if you don't like it, get on 'em!

What puzzled me was that the 256MB Nvidia card is not offered with any XPS M1730 system that I could find. I was also not aware that the physx card could be removed.

Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure that the PhysX card uses the same proprietary connection that the graphics card uses, meaning you should be able to take it out. Not sure why you would want to, though...

As for the lack of that graphics option, you'll find that options keep on disappearing from all the XPS models (M1330, M1530, M1730), because Dell is phasing out those models.

Yeah, the physx card for the 1730 is seperate (this came out before Ageia was bought by nvidia) and removable

After the sale of Ageia, nvidia integrated the physx function into their gpu's.

Well Finally got my replacement. Here are the specs:

    M1730

    T8300
    4gb RAM
    320GB,Free Fall Sensor,7.2K,WD-MX160
    Dual GeForce 8700 sli
    Vista Ultimate 32 bit
....and the rest of the standard m1730 goodies

I suppose I should be thrilled but, after the ordeal I went through, to have this mammoth system on my lap is well, less than thrilling. :(

1 month, 7 days without a working system. BTW, the grapichs card(s) have stoped responding like 10 times within 3 hrs of recieving the system. I have updated the drivers through invidias site. Hopefully that will fix it.

Grat's on finally receiving your replacment 1730!!! :D Not so bad.
If you have continued problems...I would contact Dell back and ask them what they are going to do for you now...since this is a replacement, and is having *issues*. You shouldn't already be having such prob's...

    Cin ;) :)

    BenCA,

You did well! Now I know that Dell cheaped out on the first replacement with the 8700 video card they tried sending me. I hope i get the "Dual GeForce 8700 sli" video cards too!

Honestly, I'm not impressed so far.

Funny, the first person I dealt with at Dell had it out for me big time. She canceled three systems and yesterday she called and spoke to my Daughter. She said they would be unable to replace the system due to "verification issues" Well guess what? I already have it.

I was the second owner of the E1705. I paid $470 for it. When Dell told me that They were not going to replace it, I bought a X1400 card and cooling fan to fix it. $210 for that. Then I got my cell phone bill for last month $225 of overages due to being on the phone with Dell.

470+210+225=$905 plus a month without a computer and, add in the cost of the original extended warranty. Was it worth it? ........No
