For the Latitude D630, Dell offers two choices for WLAN:

    - Dell True Mobile 1505 Wireless LAN (802.11 a/n/g) Mini-PCI Card

    - Intel Pro/Wireless 4965 (802.11 a/n/g) Mini-PCI Card

Which of these two is better? (The price is the same for both. And I don't care about the Centrino logo.)

    Thanks to everybody,

    Andrew

I would think intel because it would have wider driver support

Loaded question with equal number of opinions coming, but I think Intel will edge out the responses. Intel furnishes updates on their own web site much more frequently than Dell does, and with Draft N still in draft mode, you can be sure that there are bugs to be worked out yet before N becomes standard issue. I just purchased a Dell D820 back in June and I opted for the Intel 3965(?) and it has been very stable in both Vista Business and XP Pro.

Get Intel. Intel has an open source linux driver for it, it works great! You will never be able to run the Dell one on linux (which, I might add, does many things better than vista).

Moreover, the range on the intel one is way better. at least that's what has been reported in many reviews online.

Having used both, I highly recommend Intel, even if you aren't planning on running linux.

Not to go too much on a tangent here but which things specifically does Linux do better than Vista?

    It's cheaper.

Also, it's not "Centrino", so you'll have one less sticker to peel off.

As mentioned, the Dell card is simply cheaper. Go with the Intel wireless chip - it's designed to mate seamlessly with the Centrino chipset, whereas the Dell wireless is a self contained unit like a PCI card.
