I bought a Dell notebook from the outlet with "English Windows 7 Professional (32 BIT/64 BIT) COA"

I assumed that would let me choose 32 or 64 bit but the machine just booted up as 32bit.

Is there no way to install or upgrade to 64 bit?

Obtain Win7 Pro 64bit disc, install with the COA key.

32->64 cannot be upgraded directly, only clean install works.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a Windows 7 disc. So presumably there is nothing I can do without one?

I don't see why Dell does not clearly state 32 bit if so. Quite misleading.

Well, I contacted Dell and they say I don't get a choice and it would cost to install 64 bit Windows.

I am really suprised that Dell (on the UK outlet, at least) can sell a PC without clearly stating which version of Windows it comes with! That, and a creaky base plate, means I think this is going back...

Most COA's on the bottom will require you to call up Microsoft, it is a 3 minute phone call. Alternatively, you can find someone with the right Dell 64 bit Windows 7 disc, and it will preactivate Windows (very handy).

My machine was shipped with the 32-bit version of Windows and after contacting Dell, they sent me the 64-bit media for free.

I think I referred to this: DSN Document ID: 158098 (Operating System Changes and Operating System Swaps - Dell Global Policy).

If you Google it, you should find that you're entiteld to swap to the 64-bit of the same version.
