How much tax am I suposed to pay on an Alienware M11xR2 if the price advertised in Dell Outlet was 939.00. I also purchaced a 2 year accidental warranty of 209.00

I did use a -20% coupon. When viewing the price.. the price 939.00 then -20% .. then the 209.00 then the total.. then the tax.

    939.00 - 20% is 751.20

    751.20 +
    209 =
    ----------
    960.20

    72.70 at 8.75 % is from 831.90.. 831.90 x 8.75% is 72.70.

Where is 831.90 in my price?

    So I call to enquire.

The instant chat and phone reps ( SIX different employees/different times ) stated my price was broken down to:

    391.20 laptop
    577.00 warranty
    72.70 tax
    8.00 recycle fee.

I was told i was taxed on 391.20

    QUOTE:

5:48:00 PM Preeti N I do apologise for the unconvinced, However the specification is as follows: The $391.20 Non-service items and the non-service is $72.70.
5:48:35 PM Preeti N You have been charged $577 for service items without any tax on that
5:49:02 PM Me where does 72.70 get calculated from? what is 72.70 for?
5:50:10 PM Preeti N Its the Taxable amount on non-service
    5:50:30 PM Preeti N Items
5:50:38 PM Me ok so.. Non-service is 391.20?
5:51:01 PM Me so the tax dell is charging me from 391.20 is 72.70$ correct?
5:51:21 PM Me its 8.75% tax in california
5:51:56 PM Preeti N The Non-service amount is 391.20 and the tax on it is $72.70

    UNQUOTE

I read up on the net if tax was allowed on extended warranties in California.

    Lastnight I configured a Dell Outlet M11x R2:

    939.00 +
    209.00 warranty =
    ---------
    1148.00

The tax on that was 100.45. So the Tax was including the warranty!

IF I paid 577 for a warranty, why am I paying tax on 577?

I live in California and we dont get taxed on extended warranties..?

I guess that depends if the warranty is a product, or a service?

    I guess so.

I further read that if a warranty is included on a purchace price.. example.. a car has a normal 5 year warranty.. that is taxable..( If there is no other choice.. if I had no other option to buy that car without the warranty ). And, an extended 2 year warranty for 500 more .. will NOT be taxable.

    So my 939.... -20%.. 751.20 should be taxable..66.73 not 72.70.
The 209 for 2 accidental warranty is not.

Lastnight , calculating the 939 + 209 .. they taxed the entire total when calculating it in my cart when you are about to type in a e-value code. = $100.??

The problem with all of this is simple..

Dell's customer support lacked explination. For 2 days.. 7 hrs total.. and several phone transfers and live chat sessions.. Still to this day.. I have not been told on my exact purchace how 72.70 was calculated to tax.

I never wanted to make a big deal on this.

I just wanted to get a deal on a laptop.. and get these offers in my email on discounts ( - 20% - 25 % ) dell Outlet.

Then wonder why it went from 939.00 to 959.00 in my email confirmation email.. Then discover the tax is 72.70.. no one from Dell is explainging what is going on.. and it is clearly a very hard issue to get resolved..

Is dell ripping us off?.. Are they allowed to charge what ever they want on tax per order.. via outlet?

Im at the point where that free keyboard they state is suposed to be in a m11x outlet order.?? .. well I deserve a lot more then a keyboard.

I had to fight to get a full refund rma ups lable to be sent to me in a frantic try to BAIL OUT soon as I can and the M11x is not even arrived at my door yet!

COMON dell? what is going on?

Your the ones that sent the email to my email stating here..(COUPON) buy here and get - 20% off!

Why don't you take a look at the invoice before you try to figure out what they did? THEN ask dell what was wrong with it?

Extended warrantys are sales taxable item in NYC, so I don't know why CA would do it too differently.

I am more pissed off that it took me seven hours.. phone call hang up on me.. and still no one to answere how on earth did 72.70 came about. Then I got interested in asking for a break down and realize..

    391.20 laptop
    577.00 for warranty <--- OMG!

Then I configure another Outlet M11x R2 .. Same price of 939 plus 209 (2 warranty ) and they taxed the lot. 100.33? i think it was.. just over 100.

So yes, they are taxing the extended warranty. And gettin away with it.

    So,

When I am looking for a bargain on a referbished laptop in outlet. Aye the extra @ 10.00 and the fact it took 7 hrs, get hung up on and no one helping me.. really makes me upset.

    Thats ok :)

Your laptop isn't $391.20. That's just how Dell displays their info and has nothing to do with real value of the laptop. You paid $939 - 20% = $751.20 and that's how much the laptop costs.

    /GRIN

    Here is my story,

    Dell outlet M11x i5 4gig 250. w/o bt. 939 .00 click here

configered to add a 2 year accidental warranty 209.00

    put in cart.

    E-Value code -20% off

    tax 72.70
    fee 8
    ---------------
    1040.??

I order.. it goes through.. I'm happy.
Next day, I notice the tax.. 72.70.. hmm calculate .. 8.75% california. How did it come to 72.70.. Call dell.. 7 hrs later.. Hang up.. pass to another agent..all I got was.. system was 391.20.. warranty is 577.00.. You were taxed on 391.20 ..

    Hmm.

So I go to return it.. Call the right department.. -$100.00 credit if I stick it out.. hmm
    I wait for my order.

I call again to the tax department .. they arent there.. I call to get that agent that was nice to me.. ( return department ) " she " tells me if I want anymore credit.. I can always return the 2 year extended warranty and get that $100.00 credit = about 328.00.

Thats not what I was looking for. :(
So I tell ' her ' to give me a refund.. If Dell can not give me the info why my tax is not right.. If its short or to much.. how on earth did I get charged 72.70 which is a tax on 830.90 @ 8.75% What was 830.90.
She stats I'll be charged 15% restocking fee. I keep my patients.. and send her back to speak to a supervisor.. then she agrees to waive the 15%.She said IF I change my mind, I can get that 100 and refund the 2 year.

UPS lable on the way via email.

I call Dell and tell em the " ALIENWARE " logo is not the right color on the " ARE " part.. They send me to alienware support.. I get an agent and he does remote access.. after 1 hr .. they decide to send an agent to redo the screen.

2 days later.. screen is replaced.. ( with creaky sound hindge ) fun.

Now I call back about the 959.80 price.. HUH? it was 939.00 to start.

So I call today to get the refund department. I want to speak about what the extra $20.00 is for. They can not give me an answere.. I sugest it was because the time it took to get my item in my cart paid via debit card( creating an account and varifying the debit card ), they probably sold the one I was working on and replaced it with more expensive one.

But when I paid for it and was in my cart.. it clearly was 939.00.. The confirmation Email in my Hotmail account stated 959.80 starting price.

So I got nowhere again today. Infact, they stated I can not give you your 2 year warranty back due to the fact it is part of the service tag on that unit..

    I snapped!

We chatted again for about 45 mins pleading to look up the 'lady' name that started the UPS issue.. ' she if off today '.. and that it wouldn't matter it wont happen.

Right now, the unit is redoing windows and the box is next to it.. ready to go . UPS lable waiting.

I really wanted this Alienware M11xR2.

    Now I don't have one.. and I don't get a -20% off coupon.

Thanks Dell! I had a GREAT time.

OK, This morning I called back.. the ' lady ' just left.. got a guy that stated still they can not refund the warranty part.

what it comes down to is .. supervisor suggested I refund warranty purchace and the $100.00 ~ vs ~ other supervisor stating no.

    Not the lady's fault.

So now today.. the total refund would be $170.00.(extra $50.00 + $20.00 orig price + the $100.00 )

    I'm going with that. $1040.90 - $170.00 = $870.90
    ( M11xR2 i5 4gig 250hd ) + 2 year accident.

    I figure it's about:

    M11xR2 i5 4gig 250 ..... $583.00
    2yr Accidental warranty .$209.00
    Ca recycle fee .................$8.00
    Tax ..............................$70.00
    ---------------------------------------
    Total price ...................$870.00

I simply decided to call ONE MORE TIME after I had reformatted the HDD with fresh install.. Ready to go.. just had to tape the box .. had the UPS lable on it and everything.

I am not happy that I couldn't bring the price the extra @ 144.00. BUT I do get to keep my 2 year accidental damage warranty.

    * breaking the price down makes me feal better.

I'd like to buy an Alienware M17x but I keep hearing horror stories about Dell's ordering process, customer service, the Outlet... etc., etc.

Guess I'll try and find a slightly used one in the marketplace here... or maybe Craigslist.

Maybe I read your post incorrectly, but it sounds like they offered you a $100 credit to keep the computer. The tax was $72.70. Is a cogent explanation of the $72.70 tax really worth more than a $100 credit? I agree that Dell customer support is maddening, but money talks.
